DescriptionAs many would know by now, I am a real sucker for origin recap pages (the actual origin pages themselves either being unavailable or, and more likely, being totally unaffordable, even on previous prices and certainly not given today's prices). Recap pages are also desirable, in my view, because you get everything (or much of the origin) on one page. So when this page was offered, I knew that my hitherto finely managed original comic art budget would be thrown completely out of kilter. However, this is the nature of our hobby - given the unique nature of each piece of artwork, quick decisions have to be made. Next to the desirability of the piece, the key consideration is of course financial in nature. Like most collectors, I do not have an unlimited amount of funds to spend. Unfortunately, my collecting interests are also not niche but extend pretty much across the board - thus exacerbating the problem. If, however, finances can somehow be managed, my own approach is to purchase the piece concerned because from my experience, once a desirable piece is gone, it is gone for a long time - often into blackhole collections.I do regret not purchasing Ron Lim Silver Surfer pages when they were far more affordable - perhaps because I needed to save for the couple of Kirby/Sinnott Silver Surfer pages that will, I confess, always be my favorites. That having been said, the artwork and (especially) content on this particular page are impeccable. We are all mostly familiar with the Silver Surfer's origin and this is recapped so very succinctly on this page (which had, of course, to include Galactus). Great artwork and perspectives make this quite the page indeed. It is also signed by Randy Emberlin. Many thanks once again to Dino for letting me be the current steward of this wonderful piece of art. Social/Sharing |

Great for the art of Surfer and Galactus in the recap origin, but even better with Surfer's pathos. The irony of Surfer as lonely and trapped soul even though he can get anywhere and find anyone in the universe.

Many thanks, Marcus! And that's a traditionally as well as wonderfully perceptive comment that very appropriately accompanies this particular piece.

I am one of many who loved the Lim Surfer run, but having said that, I just need to emphasize that you did indeed make the right decision in putting your funds towards Kirby pages first. I also would like to summarize the gist of your entire first paragraph by stating that it's like I always say, we all have budgets but when it comes to decision making about pages that suddenly appear and fall into a category we really like (ie, origin recaps), even if funds are tight, buy it first and worry about it later!

Many thanks, Rubén! Yes, even from a logical point of view, if I hadn't gotten the Kirby pages, they would have been even more out of (perhaps even impossibly out of) reach for such is the market nowadays. Even when the right pages come along, we don't always have the financial wherewithal at the time, but we do the best we can (always, of course, putting family first).

congrats on the page CAB. any type of origin page is a priority for a collector, especially a character as beloved as the silver surfer. there is also the decision of what you should purchase and when. I remember when I first started collecting. I was so focused on just collecting JSA pages that I would let some real important pages(some may be considered grails now.) be sold, because I didn't want to use my funds on them and be caught short.that is just the slippery slope we as collectors must navigate. but this is still a beauty and Ron's run is very memorible to fans. this is why they are very scarce and now very desirerable when they so up om market.

Many thanks, Brian! Many thanks for reminding me of the generational factor. I didn't grow up with Ron's run although I was familiar with it and so nostalgia did not factor in as much when I began in the hobby. And, yes, it's a delicate balancing act but I think that, at the end of the day, we have a lot to be thankful for. Do take care.

Not at all Daniel. The quality of your pieces is wonderful. I was fortunate in being able to start earlier but the downside is being old now!

Great origin recap! Lim fits a lot into those partial panels there with room for the Surfer.

Something like this was originally one of my main collecting goals. I inquired once and then slowly pivoted. I will just cherish these from afar now. Yours is one I trully cherish and thanks for sharing.

Many thanks, Ian! Pieces like these are not wholly unattainable though and I hope that you will obtain a similar piece one day.
