DescriptionI was thrilled to score this prelim from the classic issue, Amazing Spider-Man #102, featuring the second appearance of Morbius with pencils by the dynamic Gil Kane. Every panel seems to pop right off the page thanks to Kane's amazing use of anatomy. Kane's symphonic and fluent movement is as "fresh" today as it was some 40 years ago! One of the few artists that project a 3D effect on every page! This issue originally hit the stands in November, 1971 (BRONZE age) and featured an all out war between a six armed Spidey, Morbius, the living vampire AND The Lizard! Talk about Marvel monster madness! They just don't make comics like that anymore. Such a treat to get a BEHIND-THE-SCENES glimpse from Marvel back in the day. Not only does this page sport Kane's pencils but also blue and black inks too. As you can see, Kane didn't cut any corners as this page is on standard 11 by 17 paper. This prelim also showcases other images that were covered up by the inker such as the close up of The Lizard! You know, NOBODY draws THE LIZARD better than KANE! There is a wealth of information from Kane's pencils that never completely transfers to the finished page. One of my childhood favorite storylines (AND favorite page) by one of the true masters! Great stuff! ALSO, A HUGE Thanks to Mike Burkey from www.romitaman.com for sharing this nice ASM 102 image from his Spider-Man collection gallery! Man, I always wondered who had that one! What a killer collection. Never will own the finished page as it was recently estimated to fetch between $8000-$10,000, but since this is 100% KANE pencils/inks (I don't think the market has fully realized the importance of such classic prelims), I am highly satisfied! The prelim is actually featured in BACK ISSUE - Monster Issue, No. 36 by TwoMorrow pub. on page 30. And recently on a visit to OLLIE’s I discovered it was also published in MORBIUS EPIC COLLECTION: THE LIVING VAMPIRE (TRADE PAPERBACK). LONG LIVE KANE!!! Recently updated with Morbius creator, ROY THOMAS and STAN "THE MAN" LEE signatures from HEROES CON 2012. It was sheer madness but I guess it was worth it. I think I got all of 5 seconds to put my arm around STAN and BAM! The camera went off and out you go! I did manage to say, "GOD BLESS YOU, STAN" as I walked away and he gave an enthusiastic, "THANK YOU!" After the handler placed this piece in front of the legend, Stan signed it and said, "WOW!" taking a sec to gaze at it just before the handler took it away. Not a very personable experience by no means but time is money (to Stan's crew) I guess. Very sad it has come to this. After signing the piece, the gentleman sitting with Roy Thomas commented how Gil didn't draw any of the gutters on my page which Roy replied, "That is about the amount of work Gil usually did on a piece. Maybe a tiny bit more but not that much." Social/Sharing |

Spidey 100-102 were my favorite ASM issues and among my very favorite comic books. I just loved that 6-armed Spider-man and Morbius never looked better!
