DescriptionInspired by Scott Williams posting of his favorite Bolland original (please look at his Bolland Sgt. Rock), I have posted my favorite Animal Man cover. Animal Man 24 was the cover that I wanted when Scott Dunbier called me to say that he was bringing the first 30 or 40 Animal Man covers to SDC. Unfortunately, by the time I called Scott D. back, this cover had already been promised. I picked up a couple of beauties that have since found their way into other collections. A couple of years later I found out that the cover to 24 went to Glen Danzig. From Glen I think it went to R. Gary Land. From Gary to Chris Caira. From Chris to Phil Laub. And in the summer of 2004, from Phil to me. A long wait, but like I say to new collectors, patience is sometimes a good thing. So why do I love this cover? Well, if you were reading Animal Man at the time, the first 24 issues were a wild, imaginative run by Grant Morrison. It was one of those under-the-radar titles like Sandman Mystery Theater, and Starman -- great comics without great audiences. I loved the comic. I loved the covers. A child of the DC Silver Age, I so identify with the context of the cover. Look closely at the poor fellow on the cover. Recognize him? That's not the real Psycho Pirate. That's me dressed as the Psycho Pirate, and comics have fried my brains. As of April 2006 the trail so far looks like Scott to Glen, to Chris H., to Chris D. to Ken, to R. Gary, ro Chris C. to Phil, to me. Anyone else care to claim one time ownership? It is now 2011 and I can't believe I've left this up for all of these years without saying that I want to acquire the thumbnail to this cover. If you have any information where this exists, can you please ask the current owner if they would be willing to sell it to a motivated buyer? If they aren't willing to sell, I would also love a high quality scan. Thanks.Social/Sharing |

This is one piece that I really miss. I can't believe it made its way through so many hands after I let it go. Let me add a little more history to the piece. I really can\t remember where I got it from but from me it went to Ken Danker to Gary Land and so on. The piece kicks major butt.

Believe it or not, this was the first piece of Bolland art that I saw that made me want to own something by him. So, please put my name next on the long list of owners! I promise I'll give it up someday too!!

What a great cover...I tried for a while to get it and once I did I should have hid it under the bed. This cover never EVER would have left my sight if it was not required of me as part of a trade for a great Ditko Spider-man piece (hard to pass up great Ditko anytime). I have wanted it back ever since I let it go. Very nice work Rich...

Wow, Chris D., the trail to me was a lot more complex than I thought. Thanks for adding your information to the art journey. Anyone remember what year that was that Scott Dunbier showed up with all of those Bollands. I know it was right at the beginning of Bolland's Wonder Woman covers. Fun, fun, fun.

Encore une formidable couverture de ce maitre du noir et blanc. It's always a great pleasure to see Brian Bolland art.

I look at this all the time so it's about time I commented on it. What you have here is absolutely my favorite Bolland cover. It's sly take on comics (and fans too, I think) can be viewed on so many different levels. I think it is safe to say that if it had made its way into my hands from Mr. Bolland's, none of you would have owned it. It would still be mine. Ahh, but thanks for sharing.

Beautiful cover. Without Bolland's covers, I think a lot of us would've never given this series a shot. Lucky for me, I was one who did.

This cover has everything I like in a Bolland piece: the human expression, the fine detail. One of the best AM covers, no doubt!
