Hiya Ed. Wow. This Superman is a very nice one. Congrats.
Long time no see, Ted. Hope all is going well with you. I’m heading to San Diego, sitting in the boarding area, and checking out Adams on CAF. Wow. This is about the best looking new piece from Adams that I’ve seen in a while. Good get. Take care.
I always loved this particular Johnny. Each panel is strong and pure.
I love this painting. The colors and shadow and dramatice pose and details are all fantastic. Wow.
I first learned about Crepax in 1976 when I bought one of his books at a San Francisco book store on Market St. near the Embarcadero. Crepax is wonderful and this is a fantastic artwork. Thank you for the nice scan.
Looked at this again this morning. Thank you for sharing this fabulous scan of one of the greatest comic book covers of all time.
I agree with Ron Pittman. This was the nicest. When I was looking through the binder of new Timm's, this is the one that I wished I had a shot at. I seem to remember the colors having more umph to them. Is this scan a fair representation of the true colors. Either way, you got the nicest one of the SDCon 2012.
I don't know where this appeared, but I remember Fujitaki was a regular in The Comics Journal around this time period. This could possibly have been a spot illustration in TCJ.
This is so cool. The piece sings out pre hero Kirby and backs it up with a Golden touch. Congrats to you, JH
Wow. This is the nicest frame I've seen in years. I love the color choices and the cuts linking the pages to the art. Fantastic.
Nice Neal Deadman page. Getting it framed is a great thing to do. It is nice to have Neal in the house.
Stan is a creator who gives his all year in year out. I love his work and his dedication to his creative arts.
One of the best Sandman originals on CAF.
Thanks Scott. You've a fantastic Steve Rude collection on CAF. I had fun looking at it.
Eastman and Laird were a lot of fun for me too. Congrats on this nice example.
This must have been a simple, "Yes, I'll take it." Fantastic.
How hot is this? Man, Scott, you have a great collection!!! Spot on good taste!!!!!
This page features beautiful design elements and storytelling choices. The three tiers are gorgeous.
This popped up when I opened CAF today as a "Featured Premium Member Art." It is a great Neal cover. Good for you.
I looked at her work at APE and in Anaheim. She is very good. I didn't know she was doing full on work like this.
One of my favorite issues too. How about the two page origin recap sequence? Or page 18 right before the Batman and Robin fight page? It has that huge close up panel of Batman. Or the last page with the Talia reveal? Hubba. Hubba. That issue is twenty two pages of fantastic. Top that off with a classic Adams cover, and it hooked a generation.
I like this discussion in the public forum. Hopefully we will get others to join in ever now and then. I've read many, many interviews with Adams and never has he mentioned anything about how much collaboration in inking when inked by Dick or Tom. I am no expert on Adams/Palmer, but consider myself knowledgeable on Adams/Giordano. While I don't think it was 50/50 or 60/40 I do think that there are pages in Green Lantern and in Batman stories that look like there is a lot of Neal. We know that Adams thumbnailed his pages. Neal has said that he liked the energy of the thumbnails and tried to translate that energy to the finished pencils. It could be that this panel was so vaguely implied in the thumbnails that Adams felt he would "draw" them in with his pen. I need to study Dick's pencil and ink work from this time period to get a better understanding of his approach. Thank you for your comments.
The bottom panel is gorgeous. Would love to see it in close up.
OMG this is a lovely page. Simple storytelling, but smartly designed and beautifully crafted.
That's interesting. Do you feel that Neal did partial inks here and there when working on Batman and Green Lantern? It feels that way to me and this fine linework in the background seems to have been inked in an instinctive rather than deliberate manner.
Joseph, you have so many fine pieces in your collection. I was reminded of this today and I must say it is special.
It is a great moment in collecting when you can add a memory like this to your collection. Herb Trimpe inked by the underrated Dan Adkins is beautiful nostalgia.
Your Byrne collection is impressive. The classic theme of DC vs Marvel makes this one my favorite, but all of them are great. I can only imagine what seeing them all in one sitting would feel like -- a mind blowing experience.
Re-inking his earlier works for the archival reprints seemed like a mistake to me.
Most superhero collectors would find it odd that I just commented on your Adams Deadman, and now I am commenting on your Frank King Gasoline Alley, but like you I admire great comic art, and this is a great piece of comic art. Frank King, Skeezix and Nina, 1941 ... how good it must be.
Great page with the top tier being simply amazing. Thanks for the nice large scan that shows off the Adams details nicely. Though my favorite Adams will always be Green Lantern, I love all phases of Neal's DC work. What I loved most about his work on Deadman is that the Adams craft is exploding with unleashed energy. Everything from the layouts to the drawing to the inks has an excitement of pushing boundaries. A standout from this early period is the variation of weight displayed in the inking. From fine detailed lines to bold brush ink, from exciting page designs to photo realistic rendering to extreme camera perspective, Neal was showcasing the potential of his emerging talent upon the comic book industry. Adams on Adams is always a good thing.
This series was one of the great underappreciated series of the 90s. Add Sandman Mystery Theater and Starman to that list. Fun titles all. I miss seeing Charles Truog's artwork in comics today so thanks for reminding me with these two pages. Nice choices that are perfectly representative of Morrison's unique take on the character.
So cool that you get your faves framed so quickly.
Congratulations, Joe. The Moore/Totleben issues of Miracleman remain some of my favorite comic book reads of all time. Any page from the series would be a great addition to a collection. This one is crazy amazing.
Hi Constant. I saw this when it was a "Feature Premium Member Art" piece today. Wow, this is one superb Art Adams original. Very nice.
I don't know about you, Felix, but I think this is the piece that makes me stop collecting. It is that fantastic.
Very impressive. Nice to see Bernie still enjoying his and Len Wein's classic creation.
Wow. Is this something that Bernie recently created? Thanks for sharing. And for reminding me about that great issue of Swamp Thing. With all of the Absolutes being printed why hasn't DC come out with an Absolute Wrightson Swamp Thing? That would be something beautiful to look at.
