Description

I have also seen this titled "Depart" but it is called "The Last of the Fellowship" in Darrell's art book. This is the elven ship leaving middle earth with Frodo & Bilbo on board. You know you sniffled during this part of the movie, don't deny it!

It appeared in Ballantine's 1982 JRR Tolkien Calendar, along with the 2 other Darrell K Sweet pieces in my gallery.

28"x26.5" acrylic on board.

The ship's name is an elven word "Elwen" meaning "Star Lady".

According to Darrell's art book, Lester Del Rey was an editor on the calendar project and an expert on Tolkien's devised language. Darrell wrote that Lester knew exactly how the word should appear backward, and this is how Darrell ultimately painted it. This is further spelled out on the back of the piece itself, as seen in additional images.

As I said in the Glaurung post, I didn't plan on any art purchases this year...then these 2 pieces popped up in 2 different places.... just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!

PS - The picture with Scruffy looks wonky because it has plastic over it at the moment. At least she's smiling this time :-P
