Description

Cory Smith is one of my favorite artists that I've discovered in recent years. His comics work is really great and the couple commissions he's done for me are just incredible. When I thought about commissioning this Legion of Karate Kids, he was the first guy I thought of. Val Armorr is supposed to be half-Japanese and half-Caucasian, and everyone tends to draw his features differently, but Cory somehow made him look right to me. Anyway, I promised Cory if he drew this piece for me I would never ask him to draw Val again!

It's so secret that Karate Kid is my favorite Legionnaire, and one my favorite characters in comics altogether. Val's 70's Dave Cockrum costume is my favorite, but that Barry Kitson-designed Threeboot costume is a close second. I should hate that fan-designed costume with the hand on his chest, but it's fun in a goofy way. Anyway, Cory did an outstanding job here with the grouping and the poses and the action lines, depicting the most skilled team-up of martial artists in all of comics history. Later I sent it over to Simon Gough to work his magic on it and he delivered this gorgeous colored art to me! I love how he altered the skin tones according to how Val looked at the time of each costume. Also, the background color contrasts nicely with the figures. This one's getting framed and going on my wall for sure! Thanks, Cory and Simon!
