DescriptionMartin Simmonds, The Department of Truth issue 20 pages 4/5---- I have not read the Department of Truth. I had never really heard of Martin Simmonds. In mid-September 2022 I made the trek to Las Vegas for the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Convention. While I was there I happened by Martin signing books and noticed his art portfolio. We spent the next thirty minutes flipping through the work while talking about his art, inspiration, techniques and methodology. Scans and photographs don't accurately convey the visual power of his work. I equivocate his art to the perfect mix of Bill Sienkiewicz, Dave McKean and David Mack. There are textures and other non-standard elements you don't typically see in comic art. In addition to the fantastic art, Martin himself was a treat to talk with. He spoke elegantly about his work, was engaging, cheerful and provided additional information along the way. Unlike the typical superfluous con conversations I'm use to; this felt genuine. So now I'm hooked! Not only am I a fan of his art but a fan of the man himself. I went back the next day and picked up a few pages (see my Primordial issue 1 variant cover) of which these two were part of the acquisition. The color pops off the pages! The art is gritty and textured. I love it! If you ever have the opportunity to see his art in person or pick up a piece I highly encourage you to do so! I still haven't read the Department of Truth... but I'm going to. :) Social/Sharing |

This is like Captian America's shield put into a blender! DOT is a perfect vehicle for his art that subverts expectations!

A beautiful and colorful DPS from Simmonds that offers quite the distorted view of the American dream. Excellent pick up!
