DescriptionYears ago, I stumbled across pure magic on the printed page. It was the Michael Kaluta adaptation of ERB's "Lost on Venus." I'm still amazed by the way Michael perfectly captured that cloud shrouded Burroughsian world. Duare in the garden, gathering tarel, The magnificent treescapes of forested Amtor, and being adrift on the raging Venusian seas. Michael captured them all to epic perfection. I was hooked for life. Simply magic. I would love to see a hardcover collection of this amazing series.Sometime later, I was thrilled to hear that he would be taking on the adventures of The Shadow. Again a perfect match. Again magic on the page. As a pulp fan I loved how Michael brought the noirish world of Depression era America to life. The atmosphere was so real, and authentic, that you could cut it with a knife. I would have loved to see one hundred issues of this amazing series, but it was not to be. Michael did give us one of the definitive versions of Gangland's Doom. It stands the test of time as do few other depictions of the character. I've followed Michael's work over the years. The Studio, Multiple wondrous comics and covers, the REH Grant story illustrations, Starstruck, and the recent IDW Princess of Mars volume. All are touched by Michael's unique creative genius. He is a true living legend among his peers. A while back, I had the opportunity to commission Michael for this Shadow piece. It is based on a story idea that has been floating around in my head for several years. The finished product was a dream come true. Thanks Michael for bringing my dreams to life. Social/Sharing |

Intense!I agree. Hot lead, cold hearted villains, gutsy gals, and the Shadow dispensing his own brand of justice. Who could ask for anything more?

With all the details to distract the eye (of which there are a plethora), I like how Kaluta is able to center the action and the viewers eye on the Shadow and Margot simply through mixing in a different colored ink.

I keep discovering little hidden pockets of art. The highlighting ink does immediately draw the eye of the viewer. The Shadow becomes a nexus of the amazing action flowing around him. So glad you enjoyed the piece.
