Description

The brothers Matsumoto have had a major impact on manga and both have found success both in Japan and abroad. Although I prefer the art of Taiyo, Leiji is no slouch! In fact, I suspect he is the more famous of the two brothers and certainly found more viewers with his Battleship Yamato, Galaxy Express 999 and Pirate Captain Harlock series getting a lot of airplay internationally. This page is from a lesser known title and a spin-off of the Yamato series. Done in 1993, this manga series was also turned into anime. I like Leija's delicate lines and female figures. Although I don't know the context of this page, it is great example of his style and aesthetics. You can't help thing about Yoshito Amano's work and the possible influence one may have had on the other with Matsumoto being almost 15 years the senior.

I kind of prefer the uncropped image. It shrinks the moment to be much more intimate for this kind of feeling being presented before us. In western culture we might like it more big and bold. Also should be reminding to read from right to left so the story fades to black.

Amano influences came to mind when I saw it as well, really nice and rare Manga art by Leiji - you only mostly see anime cels out there. congrats!

Every page of Matsumoto's work is a masterpiece for me, and here's a rare example of the ideal of female beauty that's even harder to find. Congratulations, it's truly beautiful!
