DescriptionJust saw Spider-Man: Far From Home (and really enjoyed it!) so thought it’d be a good time to post another Spidey piece…and this one’s a biggie for me. My first Leinil Yu piece! I’ve enjoyed the guy’s work since his late ‘90s Wolverine run and it’s taken me a while to find a piece with that right combo of art/price/characters – this definitely fit the bill. I won this via ComicLink’s most recent Featured Auction…luckily the winning bid was just shy of my max. Whew! IMO this is one of Yu’s best covers…no bias ;)Got 2 of Marvel’s heavy hitters facing off – like the poses on both but the Spidey is amazing (pun intended), one of my fave Spidey images, in general. The detailed work on this all around, actually, is top notch. True mixed media with pen/ink, ink wash, and marker. Leinil’s a beast in any media, as he does pieces, including covers, in pencil only, pen/ink, etc. But I am glad I was able to get one that incorporated it all. Some really precise ink lines here, like with the webbing on Spidey’s costume and Cap’s belt, but what really sealed this for me was the tone work via ink wash. I love how the shading came through on Spidey particularly, and Cap’s shield! There’s a lot to pore over like how you can see Spidey’s left ear through the costume (again, that ink wash) and how/where Yu used white ink for highlighting. Also, you’ll see how the background birds and buildings are done more loosely, without any pen lines. I think this adds an organic feel and a nice juxtaposition against characters and background. Color-wise you can also see the buildings in a cooler grey vs. the heroes and birds in a warmer one. Well, as always, thanks for looking and hope y’all like the Yu Spidey/Cap goodness! Cap and Spidey together in one amazing image! By the masterful Leinel Yu! And such beautiful textures and use of different types of media. Wow, this one is an absolute winner !!!

Back in the late 90's, the moment I saw Yu's work on Wolverine, I pegged him as one of the next hot artists. I loved his work then, but was dismayed to see him leave that Wolverine style not long after. Not that the change in style was bad, in fact I liked it, but I was dismayed because I knew the newer style meant I'd no longer see the first one he used. Then he continued to experiment and evolve his style with seemingly every subsequent project, and I realized that he was simply a genius looking to find his voice, much like Sienkiewicz's career path. It's been a pleasure to see his entire evolution as an artist, and it's cool to see this short lived portion of that evolution. Congrats, K!

Nailed it, Ruben - I agree. He’s broadened in terms of skill with different media, while also improving as a pure illustrator (he told me a few years back that’s it’s hard for him to look at female characters he drew when staring out!) and in his storytelling. I, too, miss that traditional inked look but his expansion lent to this cover beaut, so that works for me! That said, if anyone out there has seen Wolvie vs. Sabretooth battle pages from issue #126 and/or the #127 cover let ME know! Thanks, Ruben, and all, for the comments!

I personally don’t care much for his (interior) work anymore but he can still draw an impactful cover. Like this one.

I hear you, and stems from my prior comment. I really liked his ‘90s Wolvie stuff when inked by primarily Tadeo early then Vines later, and do miss it. Today, interiors for me are hit or miss, but his overall skills have improved for sure...case in point with this cover! Thanks for the comment, Fred.

Yu Wolverine brought me here too! His bread and butter are these cover/splash efforts where he can really cut loose. I love your description as you provide wonderful context and knowledge as to what tactics and applications the artist exacted. A truly dynamite effort.

Oh, my! Congratulations on this gemstone, K! What an incredible beauty! As you mention, the figure work on the two principle characters is top notch (as per usual), but, MAN - that city background is really what puts this one over the top for me. Reminds me of David Mack. GORGEOUS. As you rightly point out, a piece like this compiles a bunch of Leinil's showcase abilities in one place, and it is a joy to study. Again, congrats on this prize! Wow!

(...plus all those BIRDS, in motion and fluttering off behind our heroes like that, in ink wash, really add a beautiful sense of motion to this fine piece. For a THIRD time: WOW and CONGRATS! :) )

Third time, fourth, fifth...whatever you want, Jason ;) Seriously, thanks for the great comments, man. You’re spot on when it comes to background, both buildings and birds - really completes the image for sure!

I don't follow Yu's work but it seems he's gotten more refined from what I last remember (Ult. Hulk v. Wolvey)? This cover is absolutely gorgeous, congrats!

Phenomenal cover! Love Spidey's pose here! And the figure of Captain America leaping at Spidey is amazing! The whole cover is an instant classic!

Yu is hit or miss for me but this is a HIT. Awesome piece! Bravo! ( and I liked Far From Home way better than Homecoming)
