DescriptionFor the last so many years I’ve started off January with my first pickup by various artists and I’m continuing that here in 2021 with my very first Olivier Coipel piece! Definitely was a big hole in my modern art collection I’m glad to have closed! This one really hit on all fronts as far as a Coipel example for me. Checklist: - Great shot of a flying Thor being propelled by Mjolnir. Modern Thor’s become synonymous with Coipel and vice versa, with good reason, so it’s nice to have him as part of this page. Thor’s new look in the Straczynski/Coipel/Morales 2007 launch was a rare game changer when it comes to the look of a character - I love Coipel’s Silver Surfer, and the image here definitely was the main factor if I had to pick one with this acquisition. An awesome soaring image with the Surfer looking right at the reader. Coipel’s exhibiting that John Buscema influence while it still being his own. I really like how he (AND inker Mark Morales!) render the reflection/sheen effect, particularly on the face here! - Glad I was able get a female character in there with Lady Sif! Determined expression in that profile shot and I love how her hair’s done - I’m as big a fan of Coipel’s pin up-y stuff as anyone but I’m really impressed with his interiors – he’s one of the best at mixing great storytelling with splashier images. Here, got that cool unique layered panel layout beneath the money shot up top. Got a little Allfather at the end to top it off. OK I think that’s it :) I missed the boat on this series initially, both in terms of reading the book as well as the OA, but am glad to now have been able to pick up such a nice example. Thanks, Mark, for parting – I know it wasn’t easy. But trust that it’s got a good home! And I hope everyone’s 2021 is starting off right! Social/Sharing |

Coipel is the definitive modern Thor artist and you can't find a better example than this. Having Surfer and Sif here is the icing on the cake. Huge congrats!

I've loved Coipel's work since his time on Legion at DC. My favorite work of his is his work on Thor. And this page is such a prime example of Coipel's stylistic highlights. The facial shots on Thor, Surfer, and Sif turned in various directions feels so cinematic. Their body arrangements on the page feel like they pop off of it. Then the action bursts forth in the subsequent panels. It's just a wonderfully dynamic single page of OA. I don't think you could ask for more from Coipel. Thanks for sharing!

Appreciate the kind, and observant, words, Ryan! Totally agree, of course. Particularly good point regarding their poses/arrangements making them pop off the page. This definitely checked many boxes as far as a Coipel piece!

Wow, what a prime Coipel Thor example!! Coipel's run on Thor was legendary in my mind, and these panels of him with his hammer Mjolnir are stunning. Add to that those spectacular Morales inks plus the big & bold images of Surfer and Sif, and you have a masterpiece. Congrats!

That Surfer is killer! And I really dig the haywire Mjolnir action and the really creative layout and panel design. Copiel even squeezes in an Odin! Great pick up. Congrats!

Super Balleriffic! I just love the ultra thin line weights Coipel and Morales achieve together. What a great looking piece!

Exquisite page, K! I will echo the sentiment shared by many here that Mr. Coipel is the definitive modern Thor artist - the combo of him and Matt Fraction on this book made it a ‘can’t miss’ event for me - and even going in with incredibly high expectations I was SHOCKED at how amazing his rendition of the Surfer was; just as definitive as his Thor, in my eyes. Every page the Surfer was on was a joy to behold, and I remember thinking at many points in these 6 issues - strongly enough to even pull me out of the narrative at the time - how incredibly lucky we, as an audience, were to just SEE this thing... I came for the Thor and stayed for the Surfer!
Mark Morales is one of the most versatile inkers around; killing it with his work on the top tier “fine artists” (Coipel, Cheung) and the equally brilliant, more “cartoony” (as a compliment) and fantastical artists (McGuinness). Touches like drawing a thick line around the Surfer’s form in every instance contributed to the otherworldliness (and surface reflectivity!) of the character, and Morales and Coipel’s work on this run is a high-water mark for them. To have a page featuring these specific characters is an absolute treasure. (You have to wonder if Matt Fraction had an inkling of what the Coipel/Morales team would do with their take on the character...)
So, yeah. I like it. :) GORGEOUS page, my friend - a gem even among the cornucopia of riches in your awesome collection!

THAT is an excellent, stunning page! Out of everyone who has inked Olivier's work, I thought Mark nailed it the best! And out of all the people Mark inks REALLY well, Olivier is one of them, if not THE guy! Great art, thanks for sharing with us!!!

Thanks, Ellis! And I'd have to agree - Mark inks lots of guys but Coipel's lines bring out some of his best stuff, no doubt. I do at some point want to get a more recent piece where Coipel does both pencils and inks. They look great, particularly with a little tonal ink wash. Not better or worse than traditional Morales inks - just different! And all oh so nice. And don't they say variety's the spice?! Whatever I can tell myself to justify more OA, lol!

Much appreciated, Anthony, coming from a fellow collector with some of the best Coipel Thor pieces on CAF! Really like that recent add from Unworthy Thor. That series looked so good from start to finish, covers and interiors included. See my comment here prior to this one...wouldn't mind the more recent piece being from that series! Thanks!

"Hey K, you hit the jackopot!": that's what MJ would say about this spectacular piece from one of my modern favorite teams. On top of that is signed by Morales! Shining pick!

Such a gorgeous page! Silver Surfer is probably not the easiest character to draw with all the shine and reflections on his metallic skin. Coipel nailed it!

Oh, I agree, Han. SS is interesting as he has a "simpler" look but it's cool how artists over the years have been able to make some unique spins. Coipel included, with some LEGIT sheen rendering, with the Mark Morales assist! Thanks!

Everything you own is a highlight, but it doesn't get better than Morales inks over Coipel penicls with a Silver Surfer and Thor team-up.
