Description

Last post of '22, and the 22nd new artist added to the collection this year!

Earlier this week I posted a Sam Cap piece, and here, moving back to Steve with this sublime Samnee sequential stunner. I LOVED his run on Daredevil, both the covers (strong unique designs) as well as his interiors. I don't believe he's sold any art from there so am happy to have this one!

He does so much with less. His style is "simpler" in terms of general detail, but that's the appeal IMO. Here, killer storytelling in this intense scene of Cap trying to fight off the mind control of baddie King Maximillian Babbington. Got the energy, the movement, the negative space goodness Samnee is known for, and some shield slingin' followed by sound effect drawn right on the board - "SPANG!" Checked a lot of boxes for me :)

Waid (also worked with Samnee on DD) as a writer no doubt contributed. I loved his run on Cap right before Heroes Reborn, then picked up after, with Heroes Return. He worked with Garney then Andy Kubert as pencillers, and that run is probably my fave Cap run, so I like how this page connects that way. Also, I talked with maybe my fave artist Mike Zeck at a con a few years back, and I asked if there were any newer artists he liked. He didn't keep up with modern books much, but he mentioned Samnee as one he was impressed with. That was cool :)

Hope you like, and hope it was a great OA year for you in '22! Best of luck in '23! And Happy New Year!

One, two, three

Somebody Samnee, art for myself
I've spent so long hoping he'll sell
They say art lifestyle is bad for my wealth
It's the only thing that seems to help

All of this biddin' and buyin' is endless
But feel Mark Waid's all that I need
Somethin' inside Samnee's Captain
I hold on to anything that gets Samnee

I'm in love cause
Samnee, don't waste your time you see
He shows damage beyond repair
Shield throw shatters the hopes of the fiend

I've always felt that Samnee's art gives off a very Silver Age type vibe, which I love. But the manner in which he illustrated the motion and action lines in the 3rd and 4th panels in particular, is sensational, giving the entire page a phenomenal sense of movement. Congrats man, and best wishes for health and happiness to you, your wife and the kids. Happy New Year!

Yup, I get that Silver Age vibe, and I'm sure Zeck did, too :)  Straight energy and movement in this page, which is what it's all about when it comes to sequentials, especially action scenes.  Thanks, Ruben, and all, for the comments!  And a Happy New Year to you and your fam as well!

Dang that's an exciting page!!  You really feel Cap striving to fight off Babbington's mind control in those top three panels.  That middle panel is so dynamic!  Cap's shield is moving so fast, it's blurry and fuzzy!  And Bsbbington gets his just desserts at the bottom.  A page brimming with energy.  I feel like you are launching us (SPANG!) into the New Year.  All the best to you and your family in 2023!

I like that!  "2023...let's GO!  *SPANG!*"  :)  Thanks, Paul, and all the best to you and yours as well!  Best of luck in the continued OA hunt!

22 for 22, and home runs, all of them!  Great write up (as per usual), K, for this dynamite page.  Fantastic layout and execution, with the slight "down slope" of the top tier of panels working as a kind of crescendo to the money shot fourth panel of Cap.  That harsh diagonal bottom border of panel 4 perfectly telegraphs the trajectory of Cap's shield and leads us directly to the impact (and sound effect right on the page!), puttin' the "SPANG" in star-spangled, for sure!  Gorgeous, highly stylized art, all in service of telling the story.  A brilliant and killer score, K - a damn fine way to close out the year!  Sincere congrats, and Happy New Year, sir!

Yeah, I love how panel 4 is almost a triangle and you get the reverse right after in panel 5 - narrows with the shield sling then opens back up with the shield "SPANG!"  Thanks, man, and Happy New Year to you as well!

Was it your goal to add 22 new artists? If so, that's a great idea. I really love the way the sheild changes from the first to the fourth panel.

22 wasn't a goal per se, but it has been an overall goal to check the box on new artist adds.  Once I hit, say, August, I figured let's keep posting toward 22 in '22 and things lined up for it.  And there were 21 in '21.  Will there be 23 in '23?!  We shall see :)  Glad you dig the idea and the page, Johnny - thanks!

As cool as the various Samnee pinups/sketches/commissions may be, to me the ability to fluidly tell a story in pictures is what it's all about, and Samnee has that ability in abundance.  This is a spectacular page by one of the modern comic book greats!

This is a great piece.  I love pieces where Cap is throwing his shield and this conveys the power and speed of the scene so well.  Thanks for sharing.

Dynamic page by a superb throwback artist. I interviewed Samnee years ago because I loved the beauty in his simplicity. Brevity of of work and not cluttering it up combined with a mastery of sequential action. Bravo!

This piece looks amazing. I love all the action on it and might I say that it could fit the bill for an only Captain America piece for someones collection it is so good. Congrats!

Samnee operates with a visual language that's unparalleled. There isn't a wasted line or space on this page. It's so easy to read and masterful. Congrats on this excellent example of his work.

Oh, I agree.  His lines are "simpler" in the sense that there's not a ton of rendering.  But that's part of the draw, IMO.  As you say, nothing wasted.  Not too little, not too much - just right. And absolutely one of our best modern storytellers.  Thanks for the add, Kevin!
