DescriptionThis is a biggie. Well, it IS literally big – a 16x24 image on a 19x28 board. But that’s not what I meant. What I mean was…I mean…just look at it. I still randomly do a fist pump here and there because of picking up Stelfreeze’s cover to BP #1 last year. Now this?!This is the wraparound cover to the Coates run volume 1 hardcover, which Stelfreeze painted specifically for it. It’s one of only three pieces Brian did traditionally for the whole run – all else was digital. Fortunate to have 2 of the 3, one B&W art, and this one color. Crazy colors. Sublime colors. Fill in your superlative. First, the overall layout and composition, incorporating so many characters and story beats. Tetu in red on the left, the challenger to the way Wakanda’s governed – big clue is what’s painted on his chest. Then Aneka and Ayo in the Midnight Angel armor, which they ended up using in the second BP movie. Literally just lifted Brian’s design for the film. I won’t go through every character, but will call out bro and sis, Shuri and T’Challa, on the right. REGAL sibs. I like here how Brian added more visible facial features through the mask on BP. Works well with the blue hues. That brings me to the pure illustration paired with the colors. Whew. See all the different palettes in different sections, looking like you got the whole rainbow represented. As you move left, feels like it’s red to blue to green to purple to blue again. With lots in between. I remember first seeing this image and immediately noticing that design element of having the erupting red energy from the Vibranium mound cut straight up right through BP. Slick stuff, man. Subtle, but not. If that makes sense. Makes sense to me, anyway. And that landscape, with the sunset, clouds, then the beam…wowza. OK, I’m done. Just take it in my fellow CAFers! And thanks, Brian, and Jason! https://www.icegif.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/icegif-993.gif UPDATE 1/29/24 - At OAX this past weekend, Mr. Brian Stelfreeze did a free sketch on the inside of my hardcover copy - see in additional images! The paper is black, so we got BP in purple and white :) Social/Sharing |

Oh man, you know I'm down with hearing you wax poetic about OA. Particularly when the piece is mine :)
I knew you'd like one. I remember when you and Bill featured my BP #1 Stelfreeze cover on a CAF update and you mentioned how that piece reminded you of his Gaijin Studios days, where he did more B&W art. And today you tend towards his colored stuff. Well here you go, my friend! In spades!
Thanks, bud, and all, for the comments! This one's a doozie!

There is almost a Heaven and Hell vibe going on with the heroes in color, the villains is red tones, and the one character who appears to be in a state of suffering in the middle.

Oh, dude I didn't even think about that, but I do see it. Far left is deep red/orange and far right is turquoise.
Love in OA how different people see different things. Thanks for sharing, Johnny!

Colossal cover ... no only because the size! I love the way that the artist express himself through colors. From the strongest red to the clearest blue. All the characters are in the right position and in the right color. Amazing creation! Huge congratulations my friend!

I only wish there might have been a videographer around when you first received this and opened it. Would've been fun to see you do a backflip or somersault. Anyway, big congrats. Wakanda Forever!

ATTEMPTED backflip. Did I succeed?! My lips are sealed!
But you're right, Eric. SO eager to see this thing up close in hand, but you gotta temper that right?! To open up the package carefully, lol. Every OA collector knows what I'm talking about! Thanks for the add, man!

Wow, this is certainly looking like a magical piece in just the right collection! Thanks for all the good info, too, as I wasn't aware that Stelfreeze even knew how to paint digitally, let alone was doing a lot of work that way. I have to point out that I really love when artists draw BP with his ears down like this, as it gives off more of the "big cat" vibe. Congratulations, man!

As far as the info, no problem, Ruben! And when I say Stelfreeze did the rest of his BP work digitally, that was all in B&W, not colors. I don't think he paints digitally, but could be wrong. I do know this is the only color piece he did for BP, though.
And it's funny you mention the ears! When Stelfreeze was interviewed early on about his run, he said he preferred the sleeker BP look. Less is more in terms of adornments, capes, etc. But he did say that he wanted to add a more aggressive, angular, look. And part of that was having the ears go back, particularly when he's initimidating or in battle! So there you go, man :)
Thanks for the add!

You can do what you wanna groove
In Living Color (In Living Cover, you know what I'm sayin')
You can prove that your Panther grooves
In Living Color (In Living Cover)
You can Wakanda soon T’Challa and rule
You see it's never too late and his cover’s too cool
Ta-Nehisi, it's ight' Stelfreeze
(In Living Cover)
And how would you feel knowin' prejudice was obsolete
And all fandom danced to this exact beat
And Midnight Angel’s came to lay down the heat
(In Living Color)
You can do what you wanna do
In Living Color (In Living Cover)
You can prove that your Panther’s cool
Electric Color (In Living Cover)
Everybody here is equally lined, (In inking cover)
This comment’s yours and what's yours is rhymed, (In Living Color)
And how would Stelfreeze know that everybody is your friend
Brush inks so thick and when inks are thin
When analytical tips are put to comments (In posted cover)
You can prove that your Panther’s cool
In Living Color (In this art cover)

Oh, Kahlil... "Fill in your superlative"? Only one comes to mind here, actually... FANTASTISPECTORGEOUS. A piece like this requires (nay, demands!) a new and custom mode of descriptor. How else could one hope to accurately convey the awe, shock, and wonder of seeing this? Not "shock" like a surprise to see it in your gallery - of COURSE not! :) - but "shock" as in a physical JOLT to see the INCREDIBLE range of color and life that Brian captured here, and imagine what it must look like at that size, with that scope, in person. An absolutely -sensational- piece, K - overwhelming in all the best ways. As overpowering, unyielding, and indomitable as the King of Wakanda himself. I cannot express my congratulations deeply enough here, K - this is downright perfection. What a piece!! Congrats, K!

"FANTASTISPECTORGEOUS" - yes, seems apt! If anything warrants making up your own brand new descriptor... :)

To me, this gorgeous cover is all about the sun rising. First you see the hints of gold and red as the sun begins to push away the darkness, then it brings the daylight and we see the sky is blue and we can see everything clearly. So symbolically, perhaps the past was dark and difficult, but T'Challa and Shuri represent the new day that has dawned for Africa. They are the light that will lead Wakanda and Africa into the future.

I didn't even think about it that way but do see it now that you say that, Bill. Nice insight there, and isn't it so cool about this stuff that we can look at the same images but see different things?! Glad you like, and thanks for the add!

Magnificent! And in living color! Love this, dude. The color blends are so good, and how it works from back to front, reds to blues, just enhances the composition so much. I know you are over the moon with this one. Great acquisition. Wakandawesome!

Thanks, Phillip! Brian is a real artists's artist. I've heard many a professional say "I've looked at Brian's stuff to help learn how to do this technique or that technique" when it comes to their art. Always more than willing to chat, too, with his colleagues and fans alike.
Speaking of, we all got to spend a few minutes doing just that at OAX! Looking forward to the doc, man - I hope production is going swimmingly. And you'll get that Brian commission done!
