DescriptionY’all thought I was done with Paolo Rivera OAX pick ups after last week’s BP cover post?! Well, I thought I was too that OAX Sunday, lol. Wrong. Wolvie Fan Mr. Rob R had this beauty at his booth, so yes, 2 unplanned Rivera father/son duo adds from the show! Now I got a Rivera cover, an interior page, a DPS, and a splash, the last one my painted example. I think I’m set. Maybe :)I love this DD arc. If y’all haven’t read it, I’d strongly suggest it. Waid/Rivera brought an older school lightness to the book which was super refreshing. And Paolo and Joe brought their unique visual take to the art, really emphasizing light and shadow in the different situations and environments Matt was in, and how he “sees” the world. WHEN you read the book, see how he does the radar sense. Great stuff. And speaking of environments…this DPS kicks off a 2-part arc (issues 9 and 10, the latter being Paolo’s last issue on interiors) vs the Mole Man that happens wholly underground. If you want to look at a couple issues for just the art, I’d suggest these . Well…issue 7 won the Eisner for Best Single Issue that year. But the run also won Best Continuing Series Eisner as well as Best Writer for Waid. OK, like I said, just read the whole thing! What a way to set things up here. Light, dark, depth, detail…makes you want to turn that page ASAP to see what happens next. Some graves are being stolen from above, including Matt’s dad’s, so of course he’s intent on figuring out why. I’ll stop there as far as the story goes…did I say go read it? Just stoked to have this example. And if you wanna see a short interview of Paolo talking his DD run, click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwOiD2SFDaE OK, that’s it for OAX adds. What shall next year bring?!?! Social/Sharing |

I really like the inking (bit more than the pencils) on this piece. Really added depth. Congrats.

This could have been a wrap around cover for sure. Just looking at it makes me want to buy the books to read the story arc. Really great DPS!!!

I'd imagine lava and sulfur would be hell on Matt's senses! Lovely pages.

Both the pencils and the inks are each sublime to look at. Paolo has created such a great looking cave scene! I love how Paolo has steeped the raised portion of the cave in deep shadow on the left, with Daredevil hiding inside. Joe applied his inks with a very beautiful softness and in the process created a nice textural feel. One of the other cool things about owning this piece is that it also happens to contain subject matter reminiscent of the subject matter on the cover for the following issue, which in MY opinion at least, is the single most impressive cover of Paolo and Joe's careers, undoubtedly inspired by Gustave Doré. Congratulations on this wonderful acquisition, Kahlil!

Totally agree on that deep cave shadowed on the left, Ruben. As your eye moves right, things light up. A real panoramic feel to the image. And yeah...the cover to DD #10. A true masterpiece. I remember it being on CLink years back...not sure why I didn't make a run. But I think it's probably cuz it got too rich for my blood. Some very lucky collector our there! It does have that Dore etching look for sure.
Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

Reminds me of that scene in the movie Phantasm, and DD seems just as unsettled as the characters did there. Excellent inks on the left! Offbeat and memorable! Big congrats!

Stunner K! So cool and in this case, this is one where the color printed version does keep up the magic!

There are probably a dozen compliments one could heap upon this piece. But for me, it comes down to just one thing. The light and shadow work. It's just brilliantly lit. Absolutely perfect and absolutely gorgeous! Especially in the left and lower portions. I could stare at this for hours. So, so, good.

Yea, man, you hit the nail. The lava is providing the light source in an underground scene...not easy to redner. But the Riveras indeed killed it, delineating what's lit and how it's lit vs what's shadowed and how it's shadowed. Glad you like it, and thanks for the add!

When Kahlil went down Florida he was lookin' for art priced to steal
He was in a bind 'cause these Sunday art finds
And he was willing to make a deal
When he came across Wolvie-Fan
Selling all the Marvel and playing it hot
And Daredevil jumped up on a hellishly stump
G said, "boy let me tell you what I guess you didn't know it but I'm an art collector too
And if you'd care to take a dare, hell makes a bet with you"
"Now your page pretty good double, son but give the Kahlil his due
I bet a Paolo of gold against your sold I think art's better from you"
The boy said, "My name's Wolvie
And it might be a win but I'll take your bet, Bub you're gonna regret
I'm the best that's ever been"
Wovie you resin up beardo and pay Daredevil lots
'Cause hell's broke loose Florida and Orlando deals are hot
And if you win, you get this shiny Paolo made of gold
But if you lose, Daredevil piece has sold

Lol, this is FIRE (pun intended), Marcus!
I think you were inspired by the song when you came up with your lyrics. Namely the line "let me show you how it's done!" Well you done did, man, you done did :)
Thanks!

Great use of light and shadow and composition within it to lead the reader's eye from left to right.

I was there when you picked this one up at OAX and the detailed background really is impressive and I can't imagine how long it took to draw it all. Now I am going to have to go and read the book.

For some reason, this DPS makes me think of an Indiana Jones movie with Daredevil standing in for Indy. Like, DD has come across an epsiode where he will now insert himself into the action.

Ha, ha, yes, I totally see it! He's surveying before he springs into action, fedora firmly placed, and bullwhip (wait, a billy club is like a bullwhip!) at the ready :) Thanks for the comment, Paul - always love hearing what others see in art that I hadn't!

Great DPS by Paolo. Really like the contrast with Daredevil in the shadows against the lighter image on the right. Congrats on picking this up.

And just when you think he's done posting Rivera stunners he drops another one! Holy Stalagmites!!! Love the detail that went into this scene and the inks are just wonderful. I am definitely partial to Joe Rivera inks! Congrats on another beauty.

Extraordinary composition on "bianchoscuro" technique. That's AMAZING my friend. It is so nice to see the heroe amongst the shades...

Breathtaking DPS by Paolo Rivera! Unbelieveably detailed! I love the way Daredevil is just tucked into a corner of the spread, allowing us to see the enormity of the operation that's going on! Striking use black by Joe Rivera to frame the scene. I love the way DD is lit from behind so that the light silhouettes his body. Really this is one of the best DPS scenes I've seen in a while. Great pick-up, congrats!

Yeah, I get more impressed with light and shadow the more I look at it. Great point regarding DD being lit from behind, providing an outline for the mostly silouetted figure. Glad you like, Bill - thanks for the add, and congrats again on the unreal DD get you posted yourself today!

There's something unique that every step brought to the table--from the depth, composition, and shading of the pencils to the high contrast of the inks and then back to the depth of the scene with the final colors--this is a team working at a high level and firing on all cylinders.

I go back and forth on whether this or the Mythos series is my favorite of Paolo's work- a DPS like this is a strong mark in the DD column! Who had Mole Man and his minions working as such an effective DD villain? Waid and Rivera, and they were sooo right. Congrats on a mega example!

I hear you, man. Probably why I got pieces from both :) How about we say Mythos is our fave Rivera painted work and DD our fave B&W?! Winners all around! I kid but I agree...this DD Waid/Rivera run is one of my fave modern ones. As you say with the Mole Man, lotsa great new narrative and visual spins on the existing...mythos, I guess, lol. Thanks for the add, Casey!

This is fantastic. Dante's Inferno with DD. I have yet to read this run even though DD is my favorite Marvel character. I stopped reading Marvel comics before this run started but I've heard nothing but good things about it.
