Description

Do you remember that month at DC? When all covers were basically close up on faces? A simple idea, a gimmick to some, well executed and which had some impact in an industry not (as) flooded with variants like (as) today.

Now Ed's Superman run with Jeph Loeb was memorable (after his fantastic Mr Majestic short run) and highly enjoyable. Finding art from it is becoming increasingly difficult nowadays. So adding a cover from that run is a special pleasure. Kind of a milestone issue as well from the Joker Last Laugh storyline.

Now Doomsday takes center stage here to great effect. Ed's version is over the top compared to his original design but you have to love that Rancor smile.

One detail that I personally love is the fact that he drew pupils inside those evil eyes. It really makes him look even more vicious.

(Needless to say, this one is NOT for the bedroom).

The pencils are exquisitely precise here, no little xs to spot the shadows probably due to the fact that the piece would be colored from it.

Ed would soar to much higher artistic heights but he was already crazy good back then.

I definitely prefer the original design, as this one made it appear that he wears a protective guard around the lower jaw. But that being said, I've alway enjoyed close up portrait covers and McGuinness is great, so what's not to love?

Everything is pronounced and juts out with a power and presence! McGuinness knows how to embolden his subjects and emphasize them at their best!

Very impressive portrait cover that presented a radically different take on Doomsday ! If I remember correctly, it's a Jokerized Doomsday.

It might be for Lex Luthor's bedroom...Man, now that is an unpunchable jawline! That's a broken knuckle sandwich waiting to happen. I really dig how McGuinness rendered Doomsday here. He took the evil to 11. And those steely eyes emanating dark mirth. Great cover. Big congrats!

Ed's run on Superman is where I first became a big fan of his work. I loved this cover when it first hit the stands, and it is very cool to see the original.

Yeah, that is a SERIOUS Superman-level threat there. And it's not just the pupils that add the menace, but the craggy chin line, with its appearance of jagged, shark-like teeth UNDERNEATH the actual jagged, shark-like teeth. Brilliantly "simple" and effective cover design, polished up and dialed in to 11 thanks to Ed's gorgeously cartoonish (meant as a compliment), exaggerated style. Fantastic add! Happy birthday, F M!
