DescriptionOK. Who’s going to help me lobby to get Marvel to publish this as a variant cover? You know how some pieces just automatically make you think that?! “Yup, should be a cover”. Yup…right here. I think it’s one of Ruan’s most impressive images (and that’s saying something) in terms of pure illustration but even more so in terms of him exhibiting his graphic design chops. Thanks, fellow CAFer “Alex N”, for sending my way! I told him if he ever was going to move it to let ME know cuz I’d be all over it. He did, and I was :) I’ll list some things out. Gotta dig the dynamic, upside down, pose and the detail on DD, particularly on the boots. And the red is so striking. Provides a great juxtaposition to the background, which I like just as much as the figure. LOVE the large tilted background “DD” and inside it you got the cityscape in the same tilted perspective?! Come on! Then…the radar sense circles, growing progressively bigger as they…radiate out, LOL. The black lines against the white background switch to white once they cross the cityscape border, creating a crazy cool optical effect. That design sense I was talking about? Yup, Dike’s showing out here for sure. Big board too at 12x16". Overall just an awesome piece. I think he agrees, too, as I sent him a note letting him I know I picked this up and loved it. He replied “Oh you got that devil! Miss him so much ahaha” I can see why, man, I can see why. He had it published as part of his recent Artbook Vol. 2 (shout out to Annabel of Kirby’s Comic Art) and actually included it twice. One being the full image on one page like the main image here and another where he zoomed in on DD, cut from the top and bottom, and printed over 2 full pages. See additional image. Yes…I think he liked it :) Aside – does a piece being included in an art/sketchbook qualify it as being published? Not sure. I’ll go with semi-published. That works. In any case, let’s get on getting it officially published as a cover! This is the 4th piece I’ve added in 2021 by Dike – not sure if it’ll be my last! Social/Sharing |

I love literally everything about this. DD is one of those characters that I don’t ever really read but I find so visually compelling. Dike is most definitely flaunting it here. Great pick up, KG.

So I'm not a super DD fan per se myself but I've read his stories on and off, and I've found when it comes to both the arcs and art, all else being equal, he's WAY up there in terms of characters. Visually, there's the conspicuous all red costume, the acrobatic gracefulness, and the multiple ways the radar sense is visually rendered. Couple that with the blind lawyer angle, the gritty street atmosphere and feel, his villains, and a lot of other stuff I'm sure I'm missing...yeah...DD's a BAD man when it comes to this comic OA game. Thanks Chris, and all, for the comments!

Beautiful art to compliment the design perfectly, love the large red laced foot ready to kick into action, my eye keeps going to it and the city depth behind. Great piece, congrats!

Always LOVED this one- way to come up with it! This and Rivera's piece with the nods to all the DD greats past are the most memorable DD pieces of the last few years to me, but this is really spectacular. Massive congrats to you on this on, K!

That Rivera piece is absolutely one of the best DD pieces I've every seen, Casey, totally agree. "Xaver ." here on CAF is a lucky guy for sure. Awesome that you think of this piece in the same vein, and I see it, too - no bias at all :) As far as letting YOU know when I want to part with it...I'll keep that in mind. Just like a keep a lot of other things in mind ;) Got your note logged right here on CAF, man, but...what's the phrase...don't hold your breath? ;) Thanks!

Hell YEAh this should be a published DD cover. But I think it definitely counts as being published, based on how it was featured in the Artbook. I love that boot in the foreground, the colors used, and also the cityscape within the two big "Ds." This is such an outstanding piece. Major congrats!!

Appreciate your 2 cents, Paul, on the pulished vs. non-published deal. I'm still mulling. As I write this I have it listed as unpublished but that may change. You know what I think part of it is? I may be holding out some hope that after our lobbying effort Marvel will smartly publish as a cover, I think. So I guess I don't wanna jinx it :) Thanks, man!

Publish that ish!!!!!! Not only could it be a cover, it could be an incredible cover. That might be my favorite representation of DDs radar sense I've seen, too. What a great design! Everything you mentioned gets a big ole nod from me. Gorgeous. Big congrats!

Thanks, J! Totally agree that Dike's way of visually displaying the radar sense is up there! And what's cool too is that it does make me think back to how other artists have done it in the past - so many great examples. Most recently Rivera's run with writer Mark Waid comes to mind!

That’s just ridiculous. Hopefully that’s being framed - would be a shame to let that one sit in a portfolio. What’s the size?

It's 12x16", so it's on a nice big board, definitely lending to a nice frame job, I do think I'll do it. I've got the Azari commission I had Dike do that I'm framing to go up on my son's wall (got the idea for my son's name after the character) but I need one framed for ME, right?! Glad you agree, Andre :) Thanks for the comment!

Excelent Dike piece. It has everything he is doing soooo good: the negative space, the composition and the city background. Congrats. Can't wait to get mine in hand.

Yep! I've actually had this piece for a bit but recently have picked up some other Ruan stuff. He's been top of mind for me in 2021 in terms of hot new ar-teests! That combined with Shang-Chi also being top of mind for many comic fans these days (MCU movie!) led me to feature anim sketch's exquisite page. Glad you like, WFW - thanks for the add!

Spectacular painting! Love the crazy angle of DD falling towards the city. And the graphic design is an impressive way to highlight DD's enhanced senses. Fabulous piece, Kahlil!

I don't know HOW I missed this when you first posted it, K, but I'm here to right a serious wrong... There is NOTHING about this incredible piece that is not stunning. The oddest thing I can find is that the 'Artbook' image didn't include that glorious red BOOT (with those multiple tiers of laces and that beautiful reflection). Okay, that AND the fact that is not (yet!) a published cover. Really, really amazing work. Congrats, K (a few months late)!
