Description

OK, I know Namor’s not a “villain” per se but he’s definitely been at odds with the Fantastic Four and other Marvel heroes over the years, since way back in FF #4, so I’m including him. At minimum he’s been a pretty consistent antagonist :)

I liked this piece right when I saw it posted for sale here on CAF. First, the Namor figure literally reminded me of an Olympic swimmer. Tall, LONG torso, big shoulders. And dig how you can tell he’s underwater just by his hair. Then, the sharks! Got a realistic look to them, with gray tone rendering. Provides a nice contrast to Namor himself, who’s in pure black and white. Plus the black backdrop, and the sharks that are farther away being darker, adds more contras. And depth. Like they’re all in the deeper ocean, slowly swimming…to where? Makes you wonder. Lastly, that graphic design element of the lower border being in the shape of a shark – just a sweet subtle touch. And the piece is big at 11x17, making for some nice corner to corner viewing!

Hope y’all like, and I’m going to keep this FF bad guy theme rollin’!

Amazing execution in all of the ways you describe. And I heartily agree that the shark swoop bottom border really helps cement the depth of field, and the feeling of depths below. Nice grab of a real stunner!

The lighting effect is awesome here, like he's being observed by an underwater camera. Great stuff!

I really like the sharks in the BG, great detail and for me steal the attention a bit from the brighter Namor.

Absolutely adore the rendering and use of lighting that really feels like Namor is in the depths. Has a bit of a Jae Lee feel to the hair/eyes too. Huge Congrats!

Oh, yeah, baby...  This is one sharktacular piece...  Just as you say, the depth(s?) of this one is -amazing- and using the nearest shark to provide the negative space bottom border is nothing short of a brilliant design.  I love the details on the shark closest to Namor (just behind him), and love the way everything fades into black in the upper right corner, too...  You just KNOW there's another army of sharks out there waiting...  Phenomenal design to this beautiful and stunning piece!  LOVE it!!  Congrats, K!

Namor? Who's that? SHARKS! Gimme, gimme, gimme! Leaving the negative space so it appears as another shark? A brilliant little touch! Sharks, dinosaurs, who DOESN'T love them? In fact, why the hell are we  all collecting pictures of "superheroes"? We should all be collecting shark and dinosaur art! Congrats, Kahlil, you can call this one "Namor: The Great White hope"!

"With Great White Shark"!  :)

Ha ha, yeah, I thought the same thing.  "I wonder if there's more comic OA with cool creatures in it?!"  I'm sure there's lots, and I may do some digging.  Gotta stick with my superheroes though :)

Thanks, Ruben, and all, for the comments!

Ha ha, yes!  You gonna do some '90s CMB for this piece, you GOTTA get Sue in there somehow, lol.  Getting some Spanish in there, too, baby!  Thanks, Marcus - the chorus just rolls :)

Nice one. His determined face is very nice but those sharks look so great.

Great use of sharky negative space to delineate the border (and avoid drawing feet? ^^).

Ha ha, you can't help but have "didn't draw feet" cross your mind, as that's kind of "thing" in our hobby, right?!  Lol.  But yeah, like you and others commented, that border delineation's pretty clever.  And provides a nice mirror to the dark space at the top right/  Sometime less is more, even if we may miss out on feet (and wings in this dude's case!) at times :)  Thanks, F!

This is spectacular!  Watanabe definitely has a command of human anatomy and also of creating power and drama.  Those sharks do look realistic, and their grayness and slight blurriness (watery effects) contrast nicely with the sharpness and brightness of Namor.  And yeah, it's always a nice bonus when the piece is a full size 11x17.  Congrats on another beauty!

Namor's power, majesty and haughtiness are perfectly rendered here. And the sharks are great as well. Congrats on this beautiful piece!

Conveys the darkness of the ocean depths like few images of Namor do.  Beautiful work.
