DescriptionMore DC here with Boston Brand – Deadman! I haven’t read many Deadman books, but always liked his design. The semi emaciated face (artists take liberties there, which I think is cool), and that bright red outfit with the huge collar. Overall just striking to look at. Pair that with Ben Oliver’s rendition (didn’t have a piece by him yet) and here we are!Just really dug the straight forward head shot, and those sunken white eyes, almost looking at you, even though there are no irises. The textures and overall rendering with the greys look great in person. And again with the red costume design…provides a sublime contrast and I actually like that the red is brushy, with an unfinished look. Picked up from Ben via Jeff at this past NYCC – thanks, gents! I don't know this character very well except for the basics, but this looks like a nice version of him, subtle rendering of skin details and contrast of red to gray is nice.

Babe, Oliver renders in gray
Face something to emaciate
I don't think I could hide Deadman’s feelin’ paint lines
Another day, drawing done for you
Dead eyes, I'm looking too close again
The big collar seen in red
If that hell would design, would it turn out sublime
Ben paints away knowin' it moves you?
I'm gonna post you by surprise
And make you realize, not Panther
I'm gonna tell you right away
Ben can paint a textured face, not Panther
He won’t replace this Marvel fan
And make you Boston Brand, Black Panther
I love you

Ben Oliver constantly amazes me with his bust illustrations he posts on Facebook, which are all fantastic. This one is no exception. Cool to see a rare DC piece make it into your collection!

This is...menacing. Do not cross him. Infact, just stay home and lock the door.

Oh, yeah! The brilliance of this character design is the coloring and simplicity of the costume: a red bodysuit with grey, lifeless skin... It automatically makes for a striking visual before factoring in the sensational talents of an artist like Ben, who adds rich character and weighted emotional elements to the mix. A fantastic and moving portrait of Boston Brand here; heroic and all too human. Beautiful work - congrats, K!

Agree on the the simplicity making it striking. Just a great visual contrast between his skin and the suit. And Ben's rendition, heroic, as you say, but also haunting at the same time. Love that about it. And not easy to do! Thanks, Jason!

It's just such a beautiful piece, and I can't stop revisiting it to look at it. It carries such a beautiful emotional weight to it; it's really very moving. I find it has this unique visual effect where I'll be studying (say) the cheekbones, and peripherally his expression will strike me as sad, so I'll "zoom out" to look at the whole again... and that sadness will have slipped away. Then I'll zoom back in to study the brow and see that sadness again, peripherally; "zoom out" and it's gone again. Some pieces have eyes that follows you as you walk around the room; this one has emotional pitfalls that swell and shift as you visually roam its landscape. It's gorgeous, Khalil.

YES! Dude, I love Deadman, and this is simple but killer. Love that look, and the detail of his skin with the whispier, lighter red gives him a fantastic ghostly look, imo. There, but fuzzed. Killed it dead! ;)

Oliver gives Deadman a feeling of decay that's perfectly suitable for a character of his ilk. Very nicely done!

What a technique! Oliver captures the perfect gray skin tone for a...dead man.
