Description

As someone who does work in the design and illustration field, I consider Milton Glaser to be an icon and a major influence. You may know him for his work creating the DC Comics "bullet" logo that was a staple from 1976 to 2005. Or from his “I ♥ NY" design in 1977, the iconic poster he created for Bob Dylan, which was included in the Greatest Hits album in 1966, or his work with Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Pierre, 7Up, Juilliard, and decades of other notable art. His work has been celebrated in the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), SVA (School of Visual Arts) and around the world as one the most influential graphic designers of the 20th century.

Milton Glaser passed in June 2020 and a handful of his pieces were auctioned off for the first time, which is were the previous collector purchased this piece. I am very grateful that I get to be the caretaker of this piece, as I never thought I'd have the opportunity to own a published piece by a legend! Many thanks to Rob Stolzer for parting with this piece and allowing me to be the caretaker. It's an amazing feeling to hold a piece that was held by a legend in the graphic design and advertising industries.

After some digging and information from Rob I discovered that this art has been published multiple times, which is a bit unusual. This piece was used:

In 1964 for "Brothers' Keepers" by Frank Smith book cover
1st edition published by Simon And Schuster, New York

In 1971 for "The Lathe of Heaven" by Ursla K. LeGuin book cover
1st edition and Book Club edition published by Charles Scribner’s Sons
Illustration art by Milton Glaser and jacket design by Carl Berkowitz
In 1998, Entertainment Weekly named it among the top 100 greatest works of science-fiction. This sci-fi classic was made into a movie in 1980 and 2002:
• 1980 Movie - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081036/
• 2022 Movie - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290230/

In 2023 this piece was included in the "Milton Glaser: POP" hardcover book by Steven Heller, Mirko Ilić, and Beth Kleber
Published by The Monacelli Press -- Named a best book of 2023 by The New Yorker, NPR, and The Wall Street Journal. First place winner of a 2024 PRINT Award for Books.

I can't help but think this piece is a bit of a self-portrait after seeing old photos of Glaser in the suit (in the additional images section). Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.

It's existential yet it's so accessible ;)

That feeling of existing in an endless moment within a moment, within a moment...

I'm so glad you discovered so much more history about this piece.  It's fascinating that it was used in multiple ways.  I'm glad it's in a very good home.

Thanks so much! I didn't think I'd have a chance to own a published Glaser piece, but have CAF to thank.

Milton Glaser is considered a giant in the book publishing field. That you know of, admire and now own a piece of his work is something special indeed. Congratulations, George!

Thanks, Ruben! He was definitely a bucket list artist, but I didn't think I'd ever have the opportunity to own a published piece.

Clear from your write-up how happy you are with this one.  Got that "fine art" vibe...love the lines used for rendering.  Congrats!
