DescriptionWhen Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud was first published, I was fascinated by it. It was a wonderful and insightful take on the medium that we all love. It used the medium itself to analyse as well as illustrate the medium. And the content was so perceptive - it provoked much thought at least on my part. I was therefore delighted to have bid successfully for this very memorable illustration by Scott from the Denis Kitchen collection (which constituted the bookplate for the limited hardcover edition of the book itself).Social/Sharing |

Great self portrait within the classy design by McCloud. I guess he's symbolically being the compass or the clock we can count on to guide us on our journey to defining terms and mechanics of comics. Best of all, this has no condition issues!

Many thanks, Marcus, and yes it is. And as always, such a perceptive observer of artwork and its meaning - Mr McCloud would be very proud of you! And yes, again, about there being no condition issues. A few of the pages I have from the book are water stained but as one-of-a-kind pages, I felt that the content in them outweighed the condition issue.

Nice illustration with very clean lines, very nicely done circular compass/clock design. And thanks for the info/review on the book, I'm going to have to track that down and check it out. congrats on the HA win too!

Many thanks, Kavi. He did a whole series thereafter but this is the very best. Do take care.

Congratulations on winning this piece, CAB! It was so thrilling to see what seems to be a very rare piece related to Understanding Comics that ISN'T damaged. What is also fun is that because this is a bookplate illustration, it can also act as a perfect "one and done" representative piece for a collection if one was happy to only own a single piece. So beautifully designed, too!

Many thanks, Rubén. Yes, it was such a relief that this wasn't water damaged. And you are entirely correct about this being possibly being a "one and done" piece. Unfortunately, because of my attachment to the book, I am still picking up a page now and again but most are water damaged and it is really heartrending in that respect.

Many thanks, Mark. You are spot-on: it is so informative and perceptive and, as mentioned, disseminates all its insights in the medium itself!
