DescriptionIf you have been watching the last few Caniff updates I have been making you might have guessed this as coming. This is the crowning jewel in the collection of my friend John Biernat who left us too soon. I am the very proud caretaker of a major piece of comic strip history. Many people consider this the turning point in Caniff's career and rapid climb to success. What a spectacular debut and having read the entire run, it really is remarkable that he knew he had something good here even on day 1. There will be a few more form this early sequence in subsequent updates.Social/Sharing |

Debut with a dramatic twirl! The build up is great as you want to see what the rest of them are looking at through the window. Nicely accentuated movement by the dress, the spin lines, and the curvature of the furnature.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees! What a way to make an entrance! Not only the birth strip of Burma, but one in which Caniff drew her in an exquisite dancing pose, almost as if he was prescient enough to know that she would ultimately become one of the most popular supporting characters in the strip. One of THE most coveted dailies for all hard core Terry and the Pirates collectors!

Hard to say if this is more historic or beautiful! It is supremely both. Glad to see it land into the proper collection!

I am slowly (two kids under two!) reading the strips form the beginning, and just came to this one. I was guessing you would have it. Another great acquisition by John and you. Love the inscription by Caniff. Stunning art and context. Can't wait to read more of Burma's story!
