DescriptionThe 45th issue of Sandman (chapter 5 of the ‘Brief Lives’ storyline) always had a certain depth, weight…and sadness about it. Along the journey to find his brother, Destruction, Dream encounters his brother’s former lover, the goddess Ishtar. For a goddess, she’s fallen pretty far – she’s now a stripper who keeps her true dancing skills and capabilities hidden. Which is sad enough, but the real sadness comes from the fact that no one wants to see her dance anyway. Her current world of ‘worshippers’ is focused on the ephemeral – tits, ass, a pretty face and maybe a good head of hair. But, to see someone dance? Really dance. No takers. She’s not completely forgotten – she’s still the subject of women’s studies classes in college – but the modern world no longer recognizes her. The story also answers the question of ‘what happens to gods & goddesses after their temples fall apart?’ Well, actually Ishtar provides the answer – ‘Some of them die. Some of them change. And some of them just keep going. Maybe some even get jobs as dancers.’ She takes whatever worship she can to survive and she does so in a ‘little temple of desire’ that is a far cry from the temples built for her 2,000+ years in the past. IMHO, an incredibly well done story – both in words and pictures.Social/Sharing |

Morpheus' meeting with Ishtar in this installment was a real highlight from the classic run. Such pathos! Love it, Chris

Stylistically, it is a stark and lovely page. Thompson and Locke were fully in step here. Also, the closeup panel of Ishtar in her goddess aspect is wonderful in and of itself, but it adds to the sadness of the more human appearance she displays throughout the rest of the page.

Great looking page. I really have to try again at reading those 5 big absolute editions sitting on my bookshelf.
