DescriptionRead this issue of Superman as a kid so many times that, ironically, the cover fell off. Always love to hold these pieces of my past in my hands - probably the best part about our hobby. Interestingly, it would not be until I started collecting comic art that I would realize what a big part of my childhood Mr. Cardy actually was.Nick Cardy (born Nicholas Viscardi in 1920) began his two-plus decades long affiliation with DC Comics in 1950. He was best know for his work on Aquaman (the character had previously starred in a back-up feature in Adventure Comics; Cardy drew the first 39 Aquaman issues from 1962-1968 and created all of the covers through issue #56, the final issue published in April of 1971) and Teen Titans (he first drew the Teen Titans in issue #60 of the Brave & the Bold in July of 1965; he subsequently penciled and inked - sometimes both - all 43 issues of the series). In the early 1970's, Cardy became the primary DC cover artist, creating covers for Action Comics, Detective, Flash, Superboy, Superman, Superman Family, Wonder Woman and World's Finest, among others. This cover to Superman 281 was near the end of his cover run on the title that included issues 253-262 and 264-285, all created in the 1972-1975 timeframe. Cardy left comics in 1975 for the more lucrative field of commercial art. He was entered into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2005. Social/Sharing |

Lois Lane never looked better than when she was a Cardy girl.

Nick has said he's modeled after Sean Connery. Amanda Connor's cover to Power Girl 7 is an homage to this piece.

Embarrassingly, when i was a kid, i thought Vartox looked like Burt Reynolds. I didn't see Zardoz until many years after I saw this. (Regardless, Cardy Superman covers rock!)

Lois never looked better. Cardy girls make the cover even if nothing else does and this one has more than just that. Congratulations.

Chris, a stunning Superman cover. Cardy is one of my favorite artists, and Superman is my favorite DC character probably because every Superman comic I picked up off the newsstand in 1972-1974 had a great Nick Cardy cover. Nick Cardy drew over 650 covers for DC during this prime period, and all of us that were lucky enough to read comics back then, were drawn to a Cardy cover like bees to honey.
