Description

For anyone looking at my CAF, they see that I have an affinity for Iron Man #232 by BWS and Bob Layton. Great story, great visuals and a nostalgic gem. At some point 5+ years ago, I thought I would try to complete the book. Over the years I've seen 17 pages from the book -- but that still has left 5 pages that I've never seen or heard about and even the 17 pages would have proven difficult if I wanted to get all of them. For example, I was the current high bidder on one page on Ebay several years ago but the seller took a private offer (without giving me the opportunity to match or exceed it) and closed the auction and wouldn't even consider talking to me about it. That was just further evidence that obtaining a complete book was likely never going to happen.

So, although every page is great, instead I decided to look for my favorites among the remaining pages and have been pretty successful in obtaining several of them (in addition to the other pages I initially owned).

Here's how I got this page. We all have stories about collecting coincidence. Unsolicitedly and within the same week, three unrelated people recently reached out to me to ask me if I was interested in obtaining their IM #232 page. One page I had passed on twice already (from prior owners) and so I passed again (I also rarely pick up something that I have already passed on). One page was very nice and I had not seen it before but it was not among my short list of favorites so I passed the owner along to a collector friend who I thought would be interested.

The third page was this one, page 3. Beginning several years ago when I learned where this page was, I have tried to obtain it but lost it each time, mostly based on bad timing and no luck, and then I lost track of it. When it arose this last time, I left nothing to chance and am happy to have secured it. It's one of my absolute favorite pages from the issue, primarily because of that great splashy bottom right panel.

Thanks for reading and looking.

Nothing like having one of Comics all time great artists draw your favorite character. Love this issue. And I can really relate to what you said in your description, as I also toyed with the idea of trying to get the complete issue for my BWS X-Men #198 cover. Anyway, congratulations on scoring one of your favorite pages from this great book. And of course best of luck in hunting down more.

Thanks Eric. Yes the fact that BWS only did three issues of IM, only two of which were in his more "mature" style (and of those, the other issue features very little Iron Man), makes the #232 issue special.

No kidding, Daren...that is a great bottom right panel. Uniquely awesome rendition of the Silver Centurion armor by BWS. Congrats!

I think Iron Man 232 is the most beautiful story of Iron Man. There is no other story of Iron Man that gave me more emotion. This page is just fantastic, there is plenty to aggiungere.Semplicemente fantastic. Congratulations, congratulations, congratulations.

in all honesty, quite possibly one of the most dynamic shots of Iron Man i've seen. By drawing the actual human eyes underneath the mask, you get a real sense of emotion behind all that metal. thanks for sharing!!

Wow! Spectacular page. BWS was putting out some beautiful work during this era.

BWS was in the zone when illustrating this issue- and there's a beautiful symmetry between this surreal dreamscape and his art in X-Men #205- the lone hero being hunted, scenes of exposed wires, tubes and cables doubling for organs... It's beautiful art- and it was a shocking departure from the (great!) Art of Bright & Layton as the epilogue to the Armor Wars. Whoever at Marvel assigned BWS this issue was a genius.

I think the page kind of speaks for itself, so as someone familiar with bad timing and/or no luck when it comes to acquiring the right page (including one by Windsor-Smith) , I admire your persistence and tip my hat to your at-long-last success.
