DescriptionThe Freedom Brigade #1 (October 1979):Summon Up The Blood ... As WWII heats up, some of the mystery men of the era are contacted by the US Government to form the Freedom Brigade. But will they be destroyed from within before their first mission even starts? Standard Comics' premiere super-team was first based in Phillie during WWII, back when they were called the Freedom Brigade. Later of course, the team would change, as would the name: "Liberty Brigade" in the post-war 40s, "Sentinels of Liberty" in the 50s, and "The Sentinels" during the 60s-80s. Of course, every kid wanted a Friends of Freedom Brigade membership certificate. Roll Call (left to right): Independence Hall, Philadelphia Top Row TNT Todd - in his secret identity he's an FBI Agent (and chemist!), so I imagine he's like a government babysitter with the amateurs; Lightning Girl - girls kick a$$; The Flag - a great forgotten patriotic character, I like his origins and costume a lot; Magno - member of the Freedom Brigade and the Sentinels (or is he?) Daredevil - not new to throwing down with Hitler; Bottom Row Black Terror - yeah, the Black Mo-Fo Terror yo; The Face - scream Nazi, scream; Silver Streak - you gotta have a speedster on the team; Woman in Red - no powers, but she kicks a$$ too Amazing-Man - super strength, invulnerability, and the ability to make himself disappear in a cloud of green vapour ~~~~~~~~ From the pencil (and pen) of Mark Dos Santos via his agent Kirk Dilbeck. Masthead design by me(!) and Christopher Ivy. This also marks the first appearance in my commissions of Nedor great, the Black Terror. Other first appearances include Lightning Girl, The Flag, The Face, and the Woman in Red. The Woman in Red has been called the first masked female crime-fighter, which sounds like a superhero to me. The title of the comic, "Summon up the blood ..." is from the play "Henry V" - Act III, Scene I. The eve of another big battle. This time against the rising dark of the Third Reich. Stupid Nazis. All that for only 40 cents! Social/Sharing |
