DescriptionLuke Cage is a dynamic and very interesting Marvel character that burst out in the early 70s, when Marvel created the personality in an effort to diversify their stable of heroes. Black culture was moving to the center of attention on TV (The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, Good Times) and film (Shaft, Superfly) and Marvel comics joined in..John Romita drew that first iconic Luke Cage cover in 1972 for Luke's own book... But you are nobody in the Marvel universe until you fight Spider-Man! Here is a page from their memorable battle.Interestingly, Gil Kane's original art was lost and John Romita quickly redrew the entire issue from photostats, I believe. So this page is John Romita pencils and inks based on Kane's always exciting and cinematic layouts. The glorious double center image is the money panel for sure with Luke in his Iconic outfit with chain belt! Snappy dialogue and great execution all around make this a page I though really represented how exciting it was to collect Marvel comics in the early 1970s and how these strong characters still resonate today, over 35 years later. WOW! What a great page - really has it all as a Romita Spidey example! I wasn’t able to pick up ASM 123 until a lot later but I had a beat up copy of Marvel Tales 100 (which reprinted this issue) that I flipped through all the time! Was a pretty brutal fight...I remember thinking it was one of the best action scenes I’d seen in comics. Sincere congrats!

Another absolute beauty, Rob - Kane's layouts are bursting with dynamism and Romita senior's inking is a fine complement.

Sweet Christmas! Luke Cage vs. Spider-Man! Now that's a dynamite match-up! Love this Romita/Kane page. You can't go wrong with a page drawn by those two titannic talents!
