DescriptionI use to think of Frank King and Gasoline Alley as another one of those long running strips that I had no interest in. I think a lot of it had to do with the later strips I saw and although consistent and perhaps great to read, they didn't appeal to me artistically. Then came the eye openers for me. The early strips and by early I mean the first 30 years which is a looooong time. The introduction of Skeezix and the travel storylines are great but it is the art during this time period that stands out. Frank King could capture a moment or an emotion in his strip like no one else. I have a daily I won earlier this year that I love, with Skeezix taking Nina out for a night of dancing. It still makes me very happy looking at this one. At the previous Russ Cochran auction there was a daily with Walt walking and the leaves of the trees and the light cast made shadows. King chose to use only these shadows to define the images. It was beautiful and I was the under bidder on it. At the time thinking it went for a crazy price but in the time since then I had a number of regrets about not pursuing it further. Well, this time around an earlier daily with a similar technique was up for bid. This one also had a really nice theme to it. I am a romantic at heart:) So, I went big on it and won. I have easily paid way more than I wanted to and it makes the previous crazy price seem like a bargain:) I couldn't be happier it is here, framed and on my wall. In addition to the content, the leaves, the lighting it also has some of the wonderful silhouette work King is known for. There is so much he puts into the gesture, posture and positioning of his characters that there is almost more said in these panels than the fully rendered ones. For me, this maybe the finest piece of strip art I have every seen.4th place in best 2012 Strip art category. Social/Sharing |

This is the most beautiful Gasoline Alley strip I have ever seen, and probable one of the nicest comic art. The shadows effects are terrific. Enjoy it, Jeff!

This is one of the rare moments I agree completely with Pablo. Breath-taking example!

Holy Crap! Is this the one you were telling me about a few days ago? Wow, those first 2 panels are simply woundrous. The technique King used to show the light/leaves casting shadows is MAGNIFICENT! Bar none, some of the best sequential art ever produced. I bow down to King, and to you, Jeff! This is the kind of stuff that takes my breath away and reminds me of the brilliance than can be achieved in this medium. Splendid....

Gasoline Alley is one of my favorite strips and this is an amazing example. I'm glad to know so much of King's work has survived the years.

"...and it makes you feel sort of joyously creepy all over." What shouldn't get lost in this beautifully drawn daily strip is the incredible writing and sentiment that King was able to convey in such a seemingly effortless fashion. Beautiful.

Jeff, this is truly a work of art and I am glad to see you as the custodian of it! There are some GASOLINE ALLEY Sundays that I think surpass this daily, but it would be hard to name a daily that is any better than this!

Truly a great strip Jeff, its beauty and message transcends over the decades. Well worth the price, I would even say you even got it at a steal.

seems ridiculous to add another comment, but holy cow, this is not only one of the most beautiful strips i've seen, but also incredibly unique in terms of visual language... it's about 30 years before raymond was doing this stuff with rip kirby... dang, this is fantastic!!!
