DescriptionI meant to use my birthday as an excuse to treat myself to a new piece of art but then this one arrived and it's hard to top really.Recreation of one of my favourite X-men covers by the inimitable Art Adams. Originally created by Paul Smith. Over the moon with how it turned out and the tweaks from the original (eg Wolverine had his back to viewer) may have actually improved on the original. My hearty thanks to Joe for talking me into commissioning it and then wrangling it. Much appreciated. And to Arthur of course for taking it and knocking it out of the proverbial. Social/Sharing |

Adams should do every cover. I'm speechless - this is amazing Joseph!

It seems wrong to call this a 'commission' given how broadly (and overly) utilized that term can be. This is pure magic.

Had the privilege of seeing this in San Diego and when Joe told me whose it was, I just kept watching your gallery waiting for it to go up. Thanks for using such a nice scan! Congratulations and happy birthday!

This is a remarkable work. I really like the way that it's not "just" a recreation. It plays to Art's love of "monsters" and that he's regarding this cover. Nice.

Art Adams was the guy - possibly with Golden - who created a new style that eventually led to Lee and McFarlane. It is nice to see he is still turning out such amazing work! Congratulations!

Can't believe I had not commented on this incredible masterpiece yet. Must have been because I could not breath the first time I saw it ;-) Anyway, huge congrats for this instant grail !

Excellent piece - it reminds me of some of Fabry's classic Crisis covers in terms of the action and layout -- very reminiscent and truly a wonderful piece by Art Adams -- evocative of Fabry's Crisis and yet its own completely original work!

I'm late to the party, but may I just add that this is one of my favorite Arthur Adams pieces? Not only is the drawing superb, but the inking is phenomenal! Love the added figure above the cover as well. To coin a word: Fantabulous!

Sorry if this is an odd question. I'm new to commissions and original art so there's a lot I still don't know.
I just bought a print of this exact piece from a vendor at Heroes Con for about $20, signed by Adams. Is this something that is common for comic artists to do, to both sell the original commission but also to sell prints of that commission?

Generally when you purchase a commission you are not acquiring any reproduction rights, just the physical artwork for personal use. So artists are free to use the image as a print, cover etc Many collectors are more than happy to see their commission used in such a fashion but if it concerns you I would definitely discuss it with the artist prior to commissioning. It might affect their decision whether to accept the commission and/or they may adjust their charge to take account of the image rights. (Arthur happened to mention to me last week that the X-men print is one of his best selling prints and has now topped the price of the original commission which was a slight surprise to me but very happy for him.)

I see! Thank you for your helpful reply. The print is definitely cool, but I'm sure the original is even better. :)
