Description

There is nothing more beautiful than a Joe Shuster Superman.

This amazing art comes from a War Bonds auction held in Flushing, NY, at the RKO Keith's Flushing Theatre on July 12th, 1944. It's produced in blue pencil on a 20" x 30" illustration board and is HUGE! The Man of Steel himself measures 20" from head to toe.

I've included a few scans as the pictures just don't do it justice. I've also included some pics from the newspaper coverage of the War Bonds event itself!

I became curious enough to search through early Superman comic strips for similar poses. And boy, I was successful right away with near identical variations of the pose! I would have included scans from three Sunday's appearing in 1943... and could have gone on and on with the dailies, but I ran out of space for additional images!)

I'm happy to be sharing this with you all on Joe Shuster's birthday. It's fitting as possibly none of us would have our cherished hobby without him.

Its true. Without him and the icon he cocreated, would there even be superhero comics? Still saddened at how shabbily DC treated them both. Super Drawing. No pun intended. Its just lovely.
