Description

What does one say when they've had the opportunity to meet one of their idols... Well, in my case... Plenty!

I just got back home a few hours ago from a roughly 800 mile round trip from Wichita Ks, To Irving TX and it was worth every mile of it to meet the Wrightson's. The show was fairly busy and there were lots of people asking for autographs, but over the next three hours I had some of the most wonderful conversations with Liz and Bernie.

While I tried not to usurp the art line, I just couldn't help it and had Liz's lead, as the Wrightson's had just found an old box which contained what appeared to be almost every single page of the four issues of "City of Other's" (CoO), and she obliged me several times "to take my time" and I did.

Talking with Liz and Bernie was immediately like speaking with friends. No plastic, no pomp, no circumstance... While taking a few breaks and notes, I must have gone through the four issues of CoO three to four times. Essentially, a lifelong Wrightson fan getting the chance to have picks of the litter. I felt like a kid at Christmas the entire time... Needless to say, I picked out a few pages which I'll put up here as I can!

Beyond that, I got to talk to Bernie about the Kaluta "Sacrifice" piece in my gallery where the printers for Christopher Enterprises mistakenly gave Bernie credit. So, now I also have one of the signatures, and Bernie quipped something like "and Mike gave me quite a ration over getting the credit too". He mentioned knowing Larry Kenton at the time, and he did not know anything about what happened to the mistaken poster run, but he'd go with Larry's story for that point. (Story is: only 5 of the misprints were not destroyed)

I was also able to discuss meeting Bernie in either very early 76, or late 76/77 in Columbus OH (I only remember it was cold), and I remembered he had in tow the original for "Change for a Dollar', which was one of the first posters I picked up when I got back into collecting Wrightson's work. This poster always held a special place for me and was the very first original Wrightson art I'd ever seen.

Bernie graciously offered to personalize my "Change for a Dollar", and signed a copy of "Shhhhhh" and an old B&W oversized Glimmer Graphics print of "I Shall be With You on Your Wedding Night" as well.

For my Yard of Art (YOA), I also got a great piece of Frankenstein's head drawn in a box (4" x 5" roughly), which was given to Bernie's eldest son to create a life-like size Frankenstein Head in a Box display, which was supposed to look like the head in a box of ice.

Steve Niles (who was also there), was kind enough to show me a picture of the finished project, which they all agreed looked awesome! But, they all equally agreed, it was just too heavy and bulky to drag around and setup at shows. Too bad, cause the pictures Steve shared sure looked like Frankenstein's head in a box encased in a VERY large ice cube! Just too cool... I hope to have Steve possibly email me a copy of the picture.

The conversation with Liz and Bernie went well beyond art and the several hours I got to spend with them was all I could have imagined and more. To top it all off, as I browsed through the portfolio, I stopped on the page with the original "Auntie Social" trading card. Without my saying a word, Bernie went on to tell me how much he enjoyed drawing this piece, and explained how he brought forth the colors in the background.

He even went on to mention the piece having a special place for him, and he'd frequently considered just taking it out and having it mounted to display at home. All this time, he had no idea how I was chomping at the bit for a chance to own this! After all, I had just purchased the preliminary a month or so back, it's posted in my gallery as well.

Anyway, trying to bring this to a close... As I finished picking out all my other pages, I mentioned wishing to add "Auntie Social" to my collection since I'd just the prelim, and Bernie just smiled. He and Liz went on to sale me the piece, and he told me he felt very good knowing Auntie was going to be well appreciated in a good home.

He couldn't have been more right...

Well, there was lots more, but all in all... The 12 hours on the road, and slightly more than 800+ miles I drove this weekend to meet the Wrightson's was everything I could have hoped for and more. If you ever get the opportunity to meet them, I encourage it highly... You really couldn't meet two nicer people.

Best wishes,

-Vaughn
