DescriptionWhen I bought this unfinished pencil and watercolour piece by Dave after his death, my goal was to have it completed by the artist who I believed would do the most justice in honouring Dave's intentions with the piece. I chose Sandy Plunkett who Dave himself had chosen to help him with THE ROCKETEER. When I approached Sandy with the notion he gave me a very considerate reply: "Well...first of all, I'm flattered that you consider my skills with water color good enough to take over where Dave left off. It's a beautiful piece you bought.I'm really torn as to the decision I should make. One the one hand, the challenge is very tempting and on the other, I'm somewhat intimidated by the idea of matching Dave's abilities. Let me tell you what I'm thinking and then you can give me your reaction. You caught me at a good time in that I'm heading to NY City tomorrow and wont be checking my e-mail for a few days. But that also means I'd like to postpone the final decision until I get back and can think clearly about it. But right now I'm thinking that I WOULD like you to send it to me. I feel that I won't be able to make up my mind until I see the original and then judge whether I feel comfortable with the paper, size, etc. "

I love how Sandy gave you insight into his thoughts. Sandy really stepped up to the challenge and he kicked ass. Dave would be proud. You made an excellent choice in not only finishing the piece but commissioning the right finisher.

If the piece were mine, I would have taken a lot to decide on having it finished. Life is strange and we don't always get to finish everything we start. However, I could not think of anyone other than Sandy Plunkett to take on the challenge. He did a great job. Congratulations to you and Sandy.

I can only Imagine the stress that both of you went thru in the decision and the finishing but it paid off and Sandy has done a Beautiful job! Congrats to both of you.

Beautiful work. I think Sandy did a marvelous job and enhanced the piece by finishing it. That said, I doubt that I would have been brave enough to try it if it had been my art. Congratulations.

This looks great Ray! I love the hair especially. I nearly bought this piece myself, but would of never thought to have it finished. I think you made the right decision. Dave would of got a kick out of it.

Great piece and great story to go along with it. Sandy made the right decision to leave the background as is. A job well done on finishing the piece without overpowering it.

And Sandy has a new book "The World of a Wayward Comic Book Artist: The Private Sketchbooks of S. Plunkett". Sandy recommends getting it from the publisher. Find the link at PlunkettArt.com

Works for me! I wonder if Dave would have had more color on her swim suit?

It's possible Len, although it is not really a swimsuit, more of an animal hide body suit. Sandy debated creating a leopard print, but in the end we both agreed that leaving out our own notions of what might have been would be more faithful to Dave than just guessing.

Sandy did an amazing job! But if it were mine I would have left it unfinished. Congrats!

It's been a little while since the last comment, but having just read your CFA-APA submission about Dave, I wanted to tell you how much I love this peice. Really beautiful.
