DescriptionThere's no way I could pass on the opportunity to grab a page from my favourite ever artist in his prime as a full-fledged comic-book artist!... OK, it's no Conan and, even as Ka-Zar goes, Astonishing Tales 10 is a late return to the character after the sheer dazzlement of issues 3-6. Even Sal Buscema's inks are a little looser than usual on that one (again, check his Conan inks on Barry's pencils...).OK, now that I've bashed it enough, here comes the nice stuff: Ka-Zar's close-up on panel one is soooo gorgeous that Barry couldn't help recycling it a few months later for Conan (see Conan 21 p.2 for the deadringer!). The overall composition is great, if not spectacular, and the nazi-led serpent-like dinosaur is well-rendered and slimy enough. When I think it took no less than 2 talented writers (Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, will you please stand up?...) to come up with that idea! OK, I'm in a nit-picking mood! After all, it's Bary Windsor-Smith art I'm looking at, Barry Windsor-Smith!!!... Sigh! Those were the days... Social/Sharing |

Very nice page! Really diggin panel 2.Thanks David! I agree with you this is a mean reptile here!!! I'm just a trifle puzzled by the composition choices on panels 5 and 7 with Zabu awkward off-border positions... Oh well, I love it all anyway!

Smith's storytelling is as strong as ever here... nice page! I have a page from this story, too... the first piece of original art I ever purchased. Owning anything by Barry Smith was a completely irresistible prospect!

I agree with the compulsion is overwhelming! As for yourself, BWS is to blame for getting me into that carzy idea of looking for original art... But I'm not complaining!

I've occasionally dreamed of owning a page from BWS' run on Astonishing Tales so this is a wonderful acquisition on your part - congratulations!

All BWS from that period (all periods in fact) are good to have, whatever story, inker ... And then sure there is a hierarchy, as always. Your catch is great, panel one is Conan like, the others very good too. Beside that you have a great collection. J'adore le Druillet.
