Description

I believe this is the first appearance of Porky Pine wearing his trademark plaid hat. It is from the first year of the syndicated newspaper strip and features a very cute self-contained gag. The more I read Pogo the more I am impressed by the written and artistic talent of Walt Kelly!

I used to not like the early Pogo's so much as I once considered them artistically inferior...how my views have changed...really a wonderful example from the first year of the syndicated strip...

We both had the same experience as I have grown to appreciate the earlier Pogo strips! I still prefer the art and storytelling of many of the later 1950's - 1971 (or so) strips, but I am very happy with this one. It is extra special as Porky Pine is one of my favorite characters and this strip has the first appearance of his trademark hat!
