DescriptionThis piece is a grail for me (though I hope to acquire more Frazettas in the future, soon as my ship comes in). I picked this up from the venerable Pete Koch back in the late 90s at the SD Comicon. This EC story really appeals to me since Frazetta's draftsmanship and inking skills were inhumanly good by 1954 when he drew this story, but these panels have the looser feel of his later work compared with the more detailed style he employed for the Buck Rogers covers (which are spectacular in any case, but out of my price range...). So this offered me the best of both worlds.I suspected Pete would have panels from CtD with him since he'd shown a couple the year before. I had originally made up my mind to buy a different panel from this story, with the two characters hanging clothes to dry beside the fireplace, but when I saw the two original art panels side by side, I surprised myself and really fell for the mood in this one. I just love the way Frazetta spotted his blacks here and the textures are perfectly indicated with his trademark combination of pen and brushwork. Skin, cloth, wood, hair, etc. all read convincingly in this piece. This is among the most finished 3 or 4 panels in the whole story, and I like the smoke from the pipe indicated in pencil, the only element not inked, so I went for this one even though it cost me a bit more than the fireside scene would have. I've never regretted it. Of course, whoever wound up with the other piece got a beauty as well! This was published in some fanzines (e.g., "Frank Frazetta Master of Pen and Ink" (1981) & "Qua Brot" (1985)), the more recent "Came the Dawn" portfolio, the EC hardback collection of "Shock Illustrated" Picto-Fiction reprints from Gemstone Publishing, Taschen's massive tome "The Fantastic Worlds of Frank Frazetta", and it appears on the back cover and interior of the deluxe version of David Spurlock's very nice "Frazetta Sketchbook II". These "Came the Dawn" panels are among some of my favorite pieces of art Frazetta ever did. Just incredible in every way. Congratulations on picking this up way back when you did.

Fantastic. A piece of history. How much power, even in a quite moment. Frazetta work seems alive - as my mother use to state when she's exposed to a piece of art she appreciates.

Utterly masterful. So much to appreciate about this piece, and you clearly do so - it's always good to see when a fine piece of art has found a good home and the right custodian. Thanks for sharing!

This is a gorgeous piece. The inking is so lush. I like the gestures and composition of this piece. It stands alone as a fine example of Frazetta's skills. As purely a selfish fan of his pen and ink work, I wish he had never picked up a paint brush ans stuck to illustrations.

Reminds me of Frank & Ellie! Love all the wonderful fine lines and use of darks. He was such a genius! Long live Frazetta!

Beautiful piece--essentially a Frazetta self-portrait; how cool is it that he looked like the men he drew? (or that they looked like him?) What a bad ass...

I'm not the world's biggest proponent of voodoo, but if we could bring Frank back just long enough to finish his version of Came The Dawn, I'd be willing to live with the consequences. Stunning panel!

A classic piece that highlights so many things that make Frazetta great. The depth, the humanity, the mastery of brush and making the complex seem effortless. Congratulations on a beautiful piece.

I love this panel. Looks like Frank inserted himself into the story. Guy looks a lot like young Frazetta.

That's truly outstanding. It's a perfect representation of why Frazetta has always been considered one of the best (and for many, THE best) comic artists ever. To have a single panel be that great, and be something where the average viewer wouldn't know if it was intended as comic art, illustration art, or fine art (since it could easily work as all 3), is a truly special thing to have. So I'll just echo what others have said about it being the perfect choice for your avatar, and say big congrats on acquiring this stellar piece all those years ago.
