DescriptionI had the good fortune to be living in Florida at the same time as Gene Colan when he created this for me, and I was able to receive the work from him personally. I spent a delightful hour or so with Gene, and his beautiful wife, Adrienne (who discreetly left us alone while Gene answered all of my fan-boy questions), with the Colans' lovely Golden Retriever, Charlie Boy, making up the party.I can attest that Gene Colan was every atom the "Gentleman" and the "Dean", as he was credited in his Marvel days. Gene was even kind enough to go out of his way to drive me home. I sat in front with Adrienne, while Gene kept Charlie Boy company in the back. In the car we discussed all of those things that one shouldn't with strangers, such as religion and politics, but somehow I didn't feel like a stranger in their company. When we arrived at my apartment, Gene got out of the car to say goodbye to me. He approached me, and, while looking very intently into my face, said, "Michael, there is a God, and everything will be okay". I will never know quite why Gene said these words to me, but I have no cause to doubt them. I also have no doubt that such a warm and genuine human being as he was, is now fully aware of the reality of his statement. Social/Sharing |

That is a truly lovely story. I can hear Gene saying that. Great piece, terrific colors to it as well - did you know Gene often drew while listening to music? Thanks so much for sharing this.

Thanks so much for sharing this. Thanks for your comments, Glen. No, I didn't know that Gene listened to music when creating. I wonder if the musical styles were changed to fit the art concept. In later correspondence he told me of a friend of his in a band in Texas (I think it was R & B).
