DescriptionWelcome back to Shemp's Gallery. Week three of Tom Grummett appreciation month.Commissions haven't always been part of my collection. I bought my first piece of OA in 1997 but it wasn't until 2005 when I met Matt Wagner at SDCC that I got my first commission. He was sitting at a table by himself with a portfolio of published pages and a small portfolio of sketches. At this point I had never asked an artist for a commission or a sketch, it never occurred to me to do so. That year I walked away with my first commission The Question by Matt Wagner. Since then I've gotten the Question and Jonah Hex commissions from various artist. In 2011 I commissioned Tom Grummett to do a Jonah Hex and a Question and he delivered. In 2013 he opened up his commission list again and I decided to go after a commission I had wanted for a long time. A full team pin up of my favorite group, Infinity Inc. To say he knocked it out of the park is an understatement. After the Marvel family commission and the Outsiders commission, last year I jumped on his list twice. I decided to go back to the beginning where I first noticed his artwork, the New Titans but in the form of the original Teen Titans which I don't think Tom ever got to draw. The Teen Titans by Tom Grummett. Aqualad, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Robin and Speedy. Tom killed it in this commission. Looks like he went with a smoother, simpler, softer line to keep the characters looking young. Exactly what I was hoping for. One of the few artists whose kid superheroes look like kids. Each character looks spot on. Love the smirk on Speedy's face. Thanks again to Messrs Hamm and Grummett. Pen and ink on 17x22 board. Social/Sharing |

Another wonderful Grummett piece! As much as I loved Grummett's work on New Titans, it would have been so much fun seeing him do a run of stories with this incarnation of the team.

The silver age choice is a good one to show off Grummett's skills with the simpler and more genuine joy of the original Brave and The Bold incarnations. This commission of the OG team is a throwback that captures the spirit of those less cynical days gone by with the modern style.

Nicely balanced with perfect renditions of the 1960's Teen Titans. Like Karl Malone, Tom Grummett always delivers!
