DescriptionI have a saying, "I didn't know I had wanted to see that until I saw it." That's kind of how I feel about Rafa Sandoval's Shazam! (AKA The Hero Formerly Known as Captain Marvel). Now, a trip to Tokyo (and, in this case, Kawasaki) involves taking the bullet train, lodging, food and, when you throw in a comic convention, other financial considerations. I was at the con, in part, to help the artists deal with their Japanese fans, so I arrived early and there was a bit of time before the show started. To pass the time, I found myself looking through Rafa's portfolios and two published Sinestro splash pages jumped out at me (well, one was a full splash and the other was a splash image with a few small panel inserts), and both were similarly priced. While not outside my price range, if I bought one of them, it might require harder choices if I saw something else that was also enticing. However, toward the end of one of the portfolio were two finished pinups (to my knowledge, unpublished), a pen-&-ink drawing of Marvel's Hercules and a fully colored Shazam. While I prefer my Shazam/Captain Marvel to be equal parts charm and whimsical superheroics, Rafa's dynamic take, with its bold colors and lightning effects, caught my attention. I also noticed that the price would allow me a bit of leeway if I wanted to buy some other art. Well, long story short, I could not get the Shazam piece out of my head and, later, when I went back to check, I saw that it was still available. It certainly wasn't what I expected to get before the con, but, Shazam!, sometimes lightning strikes. Social/Sharing |

Nice pick up! The lightning lighting (not sure I've used those two words back to back before) is killer! Congrats!
