DescriptionHere are our heroes after a few days of photographing a minion to the main villain as he indulged in blackmail-worthy misbehavior. Ethan wields the Nikon as Anna steps into a restaurant to confront their mark with their evidence. Love the mood and symmetry in this page, and I wanted something set in the urban 80s environment where some of the action takes place. Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

Definitely touches of the early 80's look with the compact cars and the Nikon. The colors finish it off with the Southern California heat and smog haze that turns sunlight into many different hues of orange.

This is the 2nd time in recent days that a Sean Phillips page actually looks a lot like a Charlie Adlard page. Even Ethan looks like Rick from Walking Dead. So interesting and curious.....

Yes, I see a lot of similarities between Adlard and Phillips, which is a compliment to both. I think Reckless has a look more similar to Walking Dead than some of Phillips's other books because this is full-size, physical art with all the blacks filled in (at least for the pages I'm going for). Kill Or Be Killed looked great, but it was all digital, and many of hte Criminal books were drawn smaller size, for instance. To my eye, it's also the case that Phillips makes subtle changes to his drawing style and the format for panel gutters and page layouts to suit the characters and vibe of the different universes his and Brubaker's characters inhabit.

Ruben, I mentioned in my response to your insightful comment on this piece that I felt Reckless pages probably more closely resembled Walking Dead since their fully inked and full size, unlike some of Phillips's other work, but I just saw some Walking Dead OA for the first time at Anthony's booth at C2E2, and they were substantially smaller than the usual 11x17 American standard, to my surprise. I don't know if that's typical for him, but I see that at least some pages Adlard inked himself on the series are 11x14 only on Splashpagecomicart, so perhaps the similar look between Phillips and Adlard is in part due to their each often working small when inking their own work. Of course, they both delve into Zombie stories and utilize a lot of shadow, which is part of their connection as well.

This whole series has been fantastic. Love the pacing and the rendering of the car in that last panel. Simply gorgeous.

Good points, my friend. That could very well have a lot to do with it.
