Description

Gene Colan and Bill Everett are the Lennon/McCartney artist pairing of my collecting life, and it's a real pleasure to finally add one of their romance pages to the collection.

In this beautifully rendered six-pager from 1971, groovy hippie chick Jeannie attempts to woo wall-eyed self absorbed cipher and vacuous romance comics trope Hal by doting on him and having fun together, only to discover that the only way to excite the curiosity and attention of a shallow, wavy-haired non-entity like Hal is to play hard to get.

Later in this issue, another sloe-eyed ing�nue discovers that boys are too thick to read ambiguous signals, and if she wants to land a fella she'd better be direct and not play hard to get.

There are three Colan/Everett Marvel romance stories, and I'd be delighted to find any pages from them: "My Love" #13 ("How Do I Make Him Love Me?"), #15 ("A Fool About Love") & #16 ("Formula For Love!").

"I-- I can't BEAR it! What if they don't surface? How do I face life-- WITHOUT them?"

Groovy is the word that came to my mind here, too. Everett's inks have such a joyful delicacy to them, especially over an artist with a looser style like Colan's. Congrats on getting a lovely page!
