Mission to Universe paperback by Gordon Dickson

Gordon R. Dickson (1923 � 2001) was a renowned science fiction author and one of my favorites. He won three Hugo Awards and one Nebula Award.

This was the first publication anywhere of the novel.

Synopsis for novel:
Set in a fictional near future where mankind has overpopulated the planet, nations are fighting for scarce resources, and the world teeters on the edge of war. Fear that deployment of a new phase-shift drive spaceship will be misinterpreted and lead to war has kept the ship grounded. The hero Benjamin Shore is the leader of a team of scientists that have been working aboard the new experimental ship. He lies to them as to their orders from the president, takes the ship into space for an unauthorized test flight, and then takes the ship and crew across the galaxy to find earth-like habitable planets where humanity can spread out.
Investigating one planet after another, they encounter: the vicious vine-tigers, weasel-like pre-men, who live on an innocent looking planet lit by the sun of Polaris; the slim Gray-furs, a race possessing fantastic knowledge, yet strangely inept; and the giant conquerers, the Golden People, with their magnificent cities, and their deadly javelin guns...
With half his crew lost, Shore prepares to return to Earth, only to find his most formidable foe aboard the phase ship itself...

Awesome sci-fi illustration piece cover! The first sentence of the novel synopsis sounds eerily similar to modern times, and the rest makes it sound like a pretty interesting read.

Ooh, a Podwil Science Fiction cover! Very nice, I especially love how he did the fire & smoke trails. I've had Podwil covers before, just sold one recently in fact, but all of the Gothic genre.

I like the intricate design of the spaceship and the mottled surface of the planet, in addition to the rocket trails. Another great science fiction cover!
