- Elio Petri on his movie "I Giorni Contati" ("His Days are Numbered")This new hybrid is a tribute to both Carl Barks and Elio Petri, where Uncle Scrooge is playing the role of Cesare, a character who meets and faces many people throughout "I Giorni Contati" with the innocence of a kid painted on a mature face. Cesare is a widowed 53-year-old plumber who one day sees someone of his same age die. He suddenly becomes aware that the same thing could happen to him at any moment, so he decides to quit working and start enjoying life. He will soon realize, though, that the past is past, youth is long gone, and nurturing hope only leads to disappointment and frustration. The movie itself is rich in themes (such as alienation and capitalism, the meaning of life, the lost time you cannot recover, etc.) as much as notable technical aspects (such as framing, montage, the use of a mobile camera, etc.). Considering this is a 1962 movie, comparing it with the movies of the same period will make you realize that Petri was well ahead of his time. I would never have expected this peculiar choice for the Barks' hybrid, but that was because I didn't have the chance to see Petri's movie yet. Once you see the movie, you understand why it was perfect for both Barks and his greatest creation, Uncle Scrooge. Talking about the illustration itself, this is another magnificent piece by Alberto. Perfectly balanced and with an amazing use of black. Also included in the additional images, the prelim and the stunning color version. Please check the other pieces in the series: - 01) The DUCK Thing (Rodolfo Cimino/John Carpenter) - 02) The DUCK Brood (Luciano Bottaro/David Cronenberg) - 03) Stalker (Giovan Battista Carpi/Andreij Tarkovskij) - 04) Valhalla Rising (Massimo De Vita/Nicolas Winding Refn) - 05) I Giorni Contati (Carl Barks/Elio Petri) - 06) 2001: A Space Odyssey (Floyd Gottfredson/Stanley Kubrick) - 07) The Birds (Romano Scarpa/Alfred Hitchcock) - 08) The Abyss (Giorgio Cavazzano/James Cameron) - 09) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Corrado Mastantuono/Don Siegel) - 10) The Man Who Fell to Earth (Carlo Chendi/Nicolas Roeg) - 11) Giù la Testa (Ub Iwerks/Sergio Leone) - 12) Eraserhead (Al Hubbard/David Lynch) - 13) Dersu Uzala (Al Taliaferro/Akira Kurosawa) - 14) The Zero Theorem (Bill Walsh/Terry Gilliam) - 15) Gran Torino (Dick Kinney/Clint Eastwood) - 16) Breathless (Paul Murry/Jean-Luc Godard) - 17) Edward Scissorhands (Walt Disney/Tim Burton) - 18) Wild Strawberries (Ward Kimball/Ingmar Bergman) - 19) Altered States (Vic Lockman/Ken Russell) - 20) Kill Bill (Marc Davis//Quentin Tarantino) - 21) Mackenna's Gold (Guido Martina/J. Wow, wonderful illustration. Almost a painting. I love the black sky, made by those incredible dense brush strokes!

Very evocative work by Alberto! I know how brilliant was Elio Petri ("Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto" is an absolute masterpiece) and you make me really curious to watch this movie :)
