Description

"Topolino e la spada invincibile" is a story written by Massimo Marconi and illustrated by Giorgio Cavazzano, first published in Topolino magazine #1728 (1989).

The adventure was meant to promote fencing (sponsored by FIS, Federazione Italiana Scherma) as well as other stories such as "Topolino e la grande sfida" (1989), "Qui, Quo, Qua e il riscatto del pronostico" (1992), and "Topolino e la spada del tempo" (1990), sequel of the "Spada Invincibile".

In this story, Mickey is the son of a blacksmith who specializes in swords and is also a skilled swordsman. Prince Gambadiferro (Pete) wants the blacksmith to forge for him the most beautiful sword, so he brings him into his castle as a prisoner.
Little Mickey receives an "invincible sword" from his father, and once an adult, he fights and beats Gambadiferro, thus freeing his father.
He believes that victory was because of the sword, but the blacksmith reveals the truth: it was only a common sword, and he won only thanks to his talent and hard training throughout the years.

I love Cavazzano's rendition of Mickey, and this is just a couple of years after "Casablanca" (Topolino #1657, 1987), the story where the Master stated to have found HIS Mickey Mouse.

Beautiful page by Cavazzano, one of the very few Disney masters equally at home with Ducks and Mice :)
