Description

"Sandopaper e la Perla di Labuan" is a Disney comic story, written by Michele Gazzarri and illustrated by Giovan Battista Carpi, parody of the novel by Emilio Salgari with the character of Sandokan, "Le Tigri di Mompracem".

The story is about Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge and Huey, Dewey, Louie that, during their trip on an ocean liner, are shipwrecked on an island in Borneo and meet Yanez, who to pass the time decides to tell them the countless misadventures of Sandopaper and his crew. The story that Yanez describes partly retraces that of the novel: Sandopaper falls in love with Paperanna (called the "Pearl of Labuan"), grandniece of the rich Lord Paperonk, but fails in the attempt to kidnap her and is indeed freed by her. From here the story is different as Sandopaper misses ship to the new attack and recovers a real "Pearl of Labuan", target of the Bassotthugs, as requested by their goddess Kali. In the attempt, they kidnap Paperanna asking for the pearl as a ransom. In the end, thanks to the intervention of Sandopaper's crew, the lord's niece is saved, while the real pearl disappears in the forest. Sandopaper and Paperanna set sail for the island of Mompracem.

This is an unpublished page from the story. It looks like Carpi was such a perfectionist that was not unusual for him to redraw full pages.
See the additional images for a scan of the published one.
It's really interesting to check what Carpi kept and what changed (for example, he removed most of the crosshatching for a cleaner look).

Always been in love with Sandopaper. And this is Carpi at his best.
This is kind of a little treasure for me.
(yes, I know there's no Sandopaper on this page... but I do have another one...)
