DescriptionThe Death of Superman is still one of my all-time favorite comics stories. I remember reading each comic off the rack and being captivated by every phase of epic tale. One of my very first original art pieces was the DPS from Superman #82 where Superman appears for the first time since his "death" in his traditional red and blue costume. It's still the pride of my collection. (I included a pic as an additional image.) When I saw this one at auction, I thought Oh Man, that would make a GREAT companion piece to that DPS! A huge image of Superman in his Black/Recovery Suit, needing rocket boots because of his missing powers, flying alongside two of the four "Reign" Supermen, with all that mystery surrounding him (Is he REALLY back?), drawn by the all-time great Superman artistic team Jurgens and Breeding. Well, anyway, I got it !!! And it came framed, so it went right up on the wall (see additional pic). And now I'm so excited to share it with you all. Thanks so much for looking! Social/Sharing |

OMG! I didn't expect this one to have gone to you! And the most beautiful part is that you got it for $6,000 less than the consignor paid for it just 6 months earlier, much to his chagrin, I'm sure. But just another hard lesson learned about how bad of an idea it is to consign to auction art that was already sold publicly at auction only months earlier. Nice surprise and a great get for you, man, congratulations & well done!

What a super splash page! Kind of wierd Rambo haircut, but that black costume and full figure Superman makes it special. Congrats, Paul

Important piece of Superman history that was the culmination of multiple storylines across the DC imprint with the return of all returns!

I always wondered what makes it up on your wall as a "framed" piece! So much to chose from. This is awesome and makes perfect sense!

Never read the death of Superman, Superman is just not my thing. But I like a nice splash and this is certainly one of them. Even with the black suited Superman front and center, Steel and Superboy still get good placement. Seems like the perfect end to a comic and an enticement to buy the next issue. Congrats.

Few pages exemplify the high points of early 90s Superman like a splash like this. Just iconic and gorgeous.
Thanks for sharing.

A nostalgia laser blast to the heart of my brain! The Death of Superman was a personal favorite of mine, too. I drew the reposed Supes under the flag for my dad as soon as I finished that issue. And I remember this splash image well, too. I loved the black suit design, and the Steel and Superboy designs, too. And I soaked up all the tied-in and crossover issues, with all these new Supermen. I was heavy into DC with those storylines. Gorgeous work by Jurgens and Breeding. Man, what a great duo. Very nice score. Big congrats!

Holy crap, Paul, this is me being soooo jealous! This iconic page from the Death of Superman is the definition of "Holy Grail!" Breathtaking image of the return of the one and only Superman with his supposed replacements following in his wake! Love the black costume, love the determination on Supes face, love all of it! Congrats to you, sir!!

Great splash, Paul! This was a fun look for Supes, all black with the semi long locks. This was my son's costume for his second Halloween as he was sporting that same kind of hair :) Definitely a powerful shot of Kal-El here, and it absolutely looks nice next to the DPS where he's in the classic red and blue. And with longer hair :) Congrats!

I am so glad you were able to snag this. Especially since I know you got it for less than the eBay auction. It's a huge score only trumped by your 82 double splash that you own.

I love seeing a piece of art far enough from my focus that I am not looking for or thinking about for my collection, that gives me pause and think maybe I should look for one of these. Congratulations Paul, this is so good! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comment, Carl! Yeah, the Superman 82 DPS was one of my very first pieces, and to be able to pair it with this splash years later made me SO happy.
