Description

You know what when I started collecting original comic book art and then posting it on CAF (exactly 10 years ago!), I would have never thought, or hoped, that one day I could have been the owner of a piece of history such as this strip. Never.

When I was a kid, in the early 80s, I used to read Popeye even before I started (and then never quit) reading Disney comics, but it was in comic book format and with stories written and illustrated by Italian artists. I also knew the characters from the cartoons (loved in particular the Fleischer ones).
Popeye Italian comic books were kids' stuff, so no surprise I soon quit reading (that) Popeye. Years later (maybe I was 15 or 16), I found a book in the library with Popeye adventures written and illustrated by Elzie Chrisler Segar. At the time, we didn't have the Internet, and I didn't have a clue about who Segar was but, just leafing through the book, I was already hooked.

And then I read it. And I wanted more. So I searched for all the Segar's Popeye I could find, first the strips translated into Italian and then, Internet era, the marvelous Fantagraphics Books.

I had the chance to read also other Popeye versions, such as Sagendorf's or London's, but I have to say that if there's a character that's strictly tied to its original author, I believe it's Popeye. No other rendition or interpretation comes nearly close to Segar's.

And the stories, oh boy. A comic strip full of adventures and humor with complex stories, many characters that never appeared in the cartoons, and where spinach was rarely used.

This strip is from the story arc "Eugene, the Jeep" where Olive is given the strange animal, Eugene the Jeep, whose mysterious powers are sought by the unscrupulous Mr. Chizzelflint. This 9 April 1936 strip features Popeye, Olive, and Wimpy, and ends with an important revelation about Jeeps.

I just love it.

Huge thanks, Paolo!!!

I totally agree that Segar's Popeye was and still is something really unique in the genre. Congrats on having added such a superb example of this classic strip to your collection!

Una strip dalla storia con la prima apparizione del Jeep!!! Un pezzo di storia del fumetto mondiale!!! Immensi complimenti (e immensa invidia ;-) ). Ciao, Agostino

In spite of the praise it gets, Segar's Thimble Theater is still one of the most underrated strips of all time. This is a nice example with all three main characters--congrats!

GREAT strip.  I love the feet in the air flip gag in the final panel.
