Mark's intense industrial-strike scene captures an essence of the serialized Kings in Disguise, a chronicle of life during the Great Depression of the 1930s -- a big winner in the comics industry's awards programs of the period. It won both the 1989 Eisner Award for Best New Series and the 1989 Harvey Award for Best New Series.Mark Schultz had attained prominence at Kitchen Sink Press with the 1986-1987 début of Xenozoic Tales (also known as Cadillacs & Dinosaurs). The original drawing (ink over graphite on Bristol board) Image area, 11" x 17". Excellent condition. From the Denis Kitchen Collection. Years ago I had asked Mark Schultz about the possibility of purchasing this cover, because it reminded me of the stories my Dad told me of the Great Depression. My Dad was the eldest child in his parents' home. When my Dad's father left the family due to his gambling addiction, my Dad became the main bread-winner for his mother and all his siblings. My Dad told me how incensed he was that during this time of great poverty, he was aware of tons of oranges that had gasoline poured over them to be burned rather than give them away to starving citizens and how indeed milk was poured out rather than giving it those in need. Mark told me he that he had long since sold the cover (although he did not tell me that he sold it to his publisher, Denis Kitchen). Recently Denis Kitchen has put large portions of his art collection in auction at Heritage, and when I saw this piece among the art to be auctioned, I knew I would do my best to obtain it, and managed to be the high bidder. The original drawing (ink over graphite on Bristol board) was accompanied by a layered set of translucent color-separation plates. You can see the color separation in the additional images. Kings in Disguise was issued in trade paperback by Kitchen Sink in 1990 with a Dark Horse Presents interlude inserted into the original story. It was re-issued by W. W. Norton with an introduction by Alan Moore in 2006. It was translated into Italian in 1991 by Granata Press, and again in 2006 by Saldapress. The French publisher Vertige Graphic released a French edition in 2003. Social/Sharing |

Awesome piece !! This really shows Schultz's early influences. Great brushwork. I love seeing the places on the cops where he brush is losing ink. I'll have to look up Kings in Disguise.

Terrific Schultz cover from a series that, in my eyes, has stood the test of time.

Really great as the battle lines are drawn and represents the people vs the establishment conflict. The brushwork is very fine and Schultz puts in one female figure to have an example of of the hair styles he could do very well.
