DescriptionI had attended a few comic cons in the late 80's- early 90's but I went through a period of over 10 years where I hadn't attended any. During that time a few of my artistic heroes had passed away including John Buscema and Gil Kane. It deeply saddened me that I had never had the opportunity to meet them. When I started going back to cons in the early 2000's I was determined to meet some of my artistic heroes while I still had the chance. At the top of my list was John Romita Sr and Gene Colan.I met Gene and his wife Adrienne for the first time at the 2006 New York Comic Con. They were two of the friendliest people I had ever met in the industry. Our conversations went beyond meeting for the first time. I felt as if I had know these people for most of my life, they were extremely genuine people. When I met Gene I was lucky enough to get on his commission list, and while others may associate him with his work on Daredevil or Tomb of Dracula for me it was his Captain America that I loved the most. Sometimes, the best art pieces are the ones you don't anticipate getting and they turn out better than you could have imagined! When I returned to Gene's table later on to see him working on this piece for me I was blown away! Years later I asked Gene about this piece if he'd consider making a connecting piece featuring the Red Skull firing the blast at Cap. His response was surprising, saying that would ruin the suspense of who the villain was off screen! He was always envisioning his drawings like a movie director, allowing the viewer to see only what he thought they should see. Always leaving just enough to the imagination. Social/Sharing |

Gene Colan always did a great "Captain America", and this one is stunning...and I can honestly say it looks better in person-!!!

WOW!!! I always felt Gene's Cap was every bit equal to John Romita's and in many ways equal to Kirby's for it's sheer quality of life...Congrats on a superb acquisition from one of the greatest--and nicest--comic artists of our time.

Gene and Adrienne were so wonderful with the fans as you have so eloquently captured here with words and photos. Tremendous tribute to the people and to this great commission! Congrats!

Gene had a unique style like no other. It's amazing what the man could do with just the use of pencils alone. He's truly missed. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful piece of art.
