DescriptionI love this piece. I bought it back in 1982 when I was 11 years old. I went to Golden Apple Comics in Northridge, CA, on a Friday night for new books with $5.00 in my pocket, and there it was. I was in awe. A John Bryne (my favorite artist) original art page from my favorite series, from my favorite issue, on the wall. Alpha Flight duking it out with The X-Men, wow! It was $120.00, and it was already sold! Scott Fresnia (Golden Apple employee) informed me that the buyer was going to pick it up the following day. Dumbfounded & sad, I just stared at it all night. I didn't even spend my $5.00 on books because I was too depressed.I convinced my mom to take me back the following day just to look at it before the buyer picked it up. When I walked in, Scott gave me a smile and told me the Byrne page was available. For whatever reason the buyer backed out of the deal. I gave Scott my $5.00, thank goodness I didn't it the night before, and asked if I could make payments on it. He made a phone call to the owner and the owner allowed it. I took lawn mowing jobs around the neighborhood, any jobs, to raise the $, and made weekly payments. Two and 1/2 months later it was mine. My mom threw in the final $20.00, awesome lady. John Byrne and Terry Austin X-Men #121 page 11 (Marvel, 1979). From just the second appearance of Alpha Flight, this character-rich page is a treasure indeed, and here, Terry Austin's crisp inking adds the perfect Bronze Age finish to John Byrne's power-packed pencils. This page from "Shootout at the Stampede" spotlights Cyclops, Storm, Colossus, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Aurora, Northstar, Snowbird, Sasquatch and Vindicator (soon to become Guardian). This mutant masterwork has an image area of 10" x 15". Aside from some production process stains, light overall paper aging, and a clipped upper right & left margin corner (outside the image area), the art is in excellent condition. Social/Sharing |

If this story (and the page's current value) isn't the perfect way to teach young kids how to have a work ethic I don't know what is. Great page and great story.

Just an excellent page and the back story is even better. $120 for a Byrne Xmen page back in 82 was a lot, so congrats on having such a passionate foresight!

Sounds similar to how I paid off the Punisher #2 book when I was a kid - mowing lawns for the summer... at this point though, I'm sure you have no regrets. Fantastic page!

Outstanding back story and page! I bought my first page at about the same age (with paper route money)... how I wish it had been a Byrne/Austin X-Men page! $120 was a hill of cash for comic art in 1982, but time has proven your 12 year-old ninja skills to be untouchable.

Erik more so than the beautiful artwork, I enjoy this wonderful story of how hard you worked to land this beautiful piece.I'm also very glad that it has rewarded you not only aesthetically but monetarily as well when you consider how much it's worth now

Erik everything has been stated already in the numerous comments above, obviously... I can't help it though: this just is a beautiful, really heart-warming story, for a beautiful page we all grew up with. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome battle page that takes place at the Calgary stampede! I'm from Calgary so I find it a bit amusing that the X-Men would pick here to battle out of all places. Thx for sharing!
