Kidnapped Original Pencil Cover Art by Dave Simons

Original Pencil Cover Art published many times over the years by Edcon Publishing Group for the classic story by Robert Louis Stevenson for educational purposes. It is currently still in print in various forms. Research thus far indicates that the earliest publication date I could find online as a paperback version in 1992. However I have emailed the publisher in hopes of finding out the original earliest publication date as it seems likely earlier.

I had this up for sale online (see below) as a unpublished Pirate sketch by Dave Simons and bronze-age artist Ken Landgraf saw the listing and was kind enough to contact me to provide me with identification of the piece. He emailed, "This pirate drawing was published by Edcon Imperial Books. I was the artist of the book and had Dave Simons pencil some of the pages . I inked the book and drew some of the pages. Dave had just moved to a new apartment and needed to pay the rent and asked if I had any work that he could do for me. As you can see this drawing was inked and colored by me for the book's cover of Kidnapped. Best, Ken.

Thanks again to Ken for being kind enough to identify this as the original pencils for the published cover which was inked and painted by him.

My original description details were: This splash was purchased as part of a group lot at auction some years ago. The description about it read, "a full-page uninked splash page for an unidentified pirate story. Graphite on Bristol, the image area measures 10" x 14"and the art is in Very Good condition with an uneven trim on the right side." At the top of the page the wording says 'The next time I woke up there was a man standing over me with a light. He cared for my cuts and gave me a drink." On the back of the page it says "Dave Simons", "Simons", "Unpublished?" in different areas and in different handwriting. The bag it came in has writing that I've seen on numerous pages from Romitaman and says "Dave Simons". The board has small bits of light brownish stain in a few areas mostly at the top of the page should be somewhat evident in high resolution scan.
