DescriptionGarrie Gastonny, who has worked on such books as Lady Death, Supergod and The Vault, came to Tokyo with his fellow Indonesian artist, Sami Basri, to attend the International Manga Festival (Kaigai Manga Festa). The day before, my friend had set up a Drink and Draw event at a cafe so that the local fans could get a more intimate chance to mingle with Garrie and some of the other guys (and one Japanese woman) who work in the American comic ("Amekomi") book industry. Garrie was one of the main attractions and was going to perform a live painting event.I was helping out and, after we had set up, Garrie told me he had some free time and would be happy to draw in the little red sketchbook that I tote to Tokyo for "Kaigai." I wanted him to draw a Japanese pop culture character and he said he would draw a character from Evangelion, but then he saw a book of Kaiju posters I brought with me in case I needed it for reference and he became interested in that. I told him that one of my favorite kaiju series was the Daimajin Trilogy. Each movie, though slightly different in setting and tone, has a similar structure. For the first two-thirds of the movies, they are essentially samurai dramas wherein an evil feudal lord makes life miserable for his subjects. However, in the last third of the films, a Japanese god of vengeance in the form of a giant statue comes to life and stomps on the bad guys (and, well, pretty much anything and anyone who gets in his way). Garrie loved it and decided to draw that instead. I think he "nailed" it, so to speak, even putting in the spike that the bad guys had driven into the statue's head in the first movie. Adding to the pleasure of the piece was the fact that it was a total pleasure meeting Garrie, who is far too humble considering his talent, and I highly recommend that if you get a chance, you should not pass up getting something from him.
